LONG BEACH -- With the Year of the Dragon fast approaching on the Cambodian New Year calendar, the Cambodian Senior Nutrition Program is inviting residents to join them in a meal and festivities Wednesday at McBride Park, 1550 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.
Festivities will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with music and dancing and will include lunch.
Local dignitaries have been invited. There will also be live music, both classical and modern, and the seniors from the program will put on a dance performance, according to Serey Hong, who works with the seniors and is helping to organize the luncheon.
The event is free, although donations for lunch will be accepted.
The Year of the Dragon, 2556 on the Buddhist calendar, technically begins April 13 and is historically a three-day celebration of the end of the harvest season.
With the annual Cambodian New Year parade canceled until 2013, this is one of this year's few free events available to Cambodians as the New Year approaches.
On April 1, a cultural festival at MacArthur Park served as a hybrid New Year celebration.
The annual celebration at El Dorado Regional Park, is April 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and costs $30 to $40 per carload.
