I love Umesh Pandey and I hate Hun Sen

Re: Poor Cambodia not looking so 'poor' anymore

I love Umesh Pandey. What he said was almost true. PM Hun Sen has transformed Khmers to be beggars and exported them to Cambodia's neighbours like no other Khmer leaders have ever dared to do this before. For himself, he keeps begging for money from any countries which he had visited or countries whose leaders had visited him. This is his strategy to hide the corruption of his government from being exposed. He kept saying that Cambodia is poor because he just wanted to cover up the fortunes amassed by his cronies through corrupt means. In 1979, every Cambodian was poor but now his cronies are very rich because his cronies are allowed to acquire fortunes through corrupt business deals and others who are not his cronies are condemned to be beggars.

If we look at his cronies such Sok Kong, who has amassed billions of dollars for the construction of his casino in Bokor mountain, one would need to ask where have those monies come from, apart from stealing the revenues collected from visitors to our Angkor Wat, which was built by our ancestors for all Khmers. Angkor Wat belongs to Khmers in name only, but the revenues from Angkor Wat belong Sok Kong and Sok An who are of Vietnamese origin.

PM Hun Sen has allowed trade imbalances with our neigbours. Those countries, especially our neighbours Thailand and Vietnam, which have trade surpluses with Cambodia, have flooded their goods into Cambodia, as evident by the display of their goods in every market in Cambodia. On top of this, all markets and supermarkets are owned and controlled by his cronies. In other words, his cronies have the monopoly on all imported goods which they do not allow any competition from other entrepreneurs who are not his cronies.

Umesh Pandey spent just 3 days in the Cambodian capital and all his guesses and observations are almost right. If he stayed in Cambodia more than three days, he would have got 100% right.

Good work for 3 days in the Cambodian capital, Umesh.

Why PM's 32 years rule Cambodia and still list as "least develop country" because he is a beggar he does not want Cambodia out of this preference in order for him to beg for more year to come, if this preference is lifted from "least develop country" he can not beg anymore therefore his government can not survive and his cronies will run away from him too.

Am not pro or again Mr. Huns Sen, but as Khmer born live most of my life in Europe, don't care that much about who run or how long he still leader of our country. Important is, that the leader able to rebuild of all loosed fields, like education, internal security, all infrastructures, rebuild our identity and of course able protect the sovereignty of our country.
Spent most of my life in the western world (Europe) can say, that I knew not too bad about democracy or dictatorship. But some time dictatorship can be good for a broken system like our country, because the new democracy in our country is still very fragile and could be overturn back to the old system from the last 30 years. For the future of our country, we need a really strong hand man to lead Cambodia. Mr. Sam Raingsy maybe a good man, but he is still not strong enough to overcome the pressure from all corners.

Interesting comment. I also thought that Umesh's observation of Cambodia during his 3 days stay are quite accurate. All in all, Hun Sen just give Cambodia a bad name. He even cursed analysts and opposition politicians in front of the world media. I cannot believe it!

I definitely agree with most on this blog.

The revenue from Angkor Wat (the fees from visitors to the complex should be use for updating the roads, pay for the employees who works at the complex. the fees should benefit all Khmers not just a few cronies of Hun Sen....

We dont need a strong man to lead,we need a man who can work to benet the whole populations not just his inner circle, you called that "strong hands man?" I called that weakest man using intimutation to steal votes to hold on to power to enrich his families and cronies, sold out anythings (lands)to foreign company to get wealth and sharing among his cronies. You said Sam Rainsey is not strong for leader, you're wrong,he has educaction, educator is more likely to be a better leader than the uneducator dictator and educator more likely make better decision than uneducator. Why don't give him a chance before you judge him, your strong is scare hiding behind bodyguards spend state money to protect him by millions dollars. You called that Strong!..I called that Pusssy...

The strong MAN Cambodia now has is
very strong against his own nationals, and
very weak or obedient toward Yuon.
What Cambodia needs now is a LEADER
who is a patriot, educated, a beleiver of democracy, and a Khmer defender against both
Yuon and Siem.
Yes, Cambodia has those individuals, but the Man who now leads CPP plans to imprison or assassinate them.

Anything came out of the Bangkok Post is a piece of crap. The Bangkok Post never says anything good about its neighbors. Just a bunch of jealous Thais who see Cambodia is moving toward a developed country. They write their report base on fear that Cambodia will catch up or surpass their society. Does anyone ever hear the Bangkok says anything really good about Cambodia? Honestly, I wouldn’t take the Bangkok seriously.
For once, I would like them to say something that would criticize the Thai Royal family instead of Hun Sen and Cambodia. I know they just a bunch of cowards as well. So, don’t fire up with this report. If this report came from a news organization such as CNN, CBS, NBC, MSN, CCTV then it would hold some water. I doubt that this kind of reports would be well serve in a well know news organization anyway. They would consider as trash.
It is hideous for the Bangkok Post to discredit itself this way. I would be ashamed to write this report. So, before they spread rumor about my country, let me fill them in on what I heard about their country.
When George W. Bush paid an official visit to Thailand in October 2003, attended the 11th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand government tried to do it best to clean up the image of Thailand, the land of smile. Many people were force out of the street of Bangkok include the local venders. Baggers were completely dragged out from the street just to hide its national image as inequality and classism the country. Many venders lost their revenues and many baggers went starving. Even street dogs were removed. When those world leaders finally departed from Bangkok, the street of Bangkok went back to normal which stink and dirty. Therefore, I would not jump the gun, when I read the report from the Bangkok Post. it is easier them to see my bald head then seeing theirs.

Under PM leadership Cambodia will never ever catch up with her neighbour. He rules the country for 32 years and he keeps saying Cambodia start from scratch and very thing was destroyed. To create human resource such as doctor, engineer etc. you need only 10 to 15 years and to build infrastructure you need even less than 20 years.

You build the country from 73 percent of forest to less than 32 percent; you builded bridges and roads but you have destroyed by your logging trucks. The city build without town planning everywhere eyes sore and you brought a lot of dump vehicles to the country, apart from that you have created a lot of slave labours sent to other country and replaced Vietnamese labour into the country. You depleted all natural resource such as fishery, mining and forestry and you have got instead were dump goods from your neighbours.

Now you are in desperate need more monies by giving 99 years lease to foreign investors and let them own 100% company and property but still you are not generate incomes from those investment and instead you create conflict, suffering and miserable to your own people. You morals are low and have no manner, every times you gave a speech you insulted your own people, your critic, and about all you criticise the analyst and not tolerated toward journalist.

We have classless society since 1979 but now your ministers and other people have bow to you and do duck walk for you and your beloved wife.

For your foreign policy you are quiet toward Viet encroachment; however you do not know where to stand for Thailand because of your eternity friendship with Taksin. During Asean summit you create mistrust among your Asean neighbours, and mismanagement of your minister of whom doing what? The world has complained about sanitation, mismanagement, chaos among journalist, there is no press release conference and let head of state come out individually and give brief to their own journalist. Foreign minister who lack coordination with the PM and he spoke clumsy word and broken English and also mumbling. There are some missing parts of Umesh Pandey’s observation.

If we are to look at how long it took to rebuild the country,

-we can see that after world war 2, Europe lost 60 millions lives, many countries were destroyed but it took them 15 years now becoming one of the world leading industry.

-more recently, Japan nuclear and natural disaster cost the country, thousands of lives and trillions of dollars and destroyed half of the country but It took only a few weeks to recover, today it seems like it never happened.

-Vietname had many wars, last civil war, it was estimated that 6 millions lost their lives. Today, Vietname control indochina, Loas, and Cambodia and is also one of the world leading export.

-Cambodia lost 2million lives, 32 years after the genocide, it is now the world most corrupted country. The PM is the most Dumbest PM in the world, selling away natural resources, illegal land grabbing, exporting human trafficking as maids, as fishermen, and allowing illegal immigrants to freely flow for exploitation creating many unrest civil dispute between government vs. people.

The uneducated Vietminh needs to be removed, he should have never been allowed so much power for a son of a peasant farmer from the rural country side.

Calm down, you fuel to the fire!...
educator can make better decision in any situation and he/she can compose himself/herself well infront of media or in public speech that including body language behavior or response to the questions from critics, without anger or showing raw emmotion like your (PM) had done blasting the ball head guy that has nothing to do with the summit.I knew for the fact that summit is about south China sea dispute not "ball head guy" for Hun sen he lost his mind because of his angry with his critic,Hun sen can't handle criticism from anyone due to lack of comprehensive knowledge from school.HunSen needs anger management class if he wants to be a better speaker infront of media nor address the country in generals...

It’s very enlightening blog. I learned a lot from this conversation, the comments are excellent from all Khmers walk of life and it reminded me of the reading materials I have read about the “Coup” the overthrown of Prince Norodom Sihanuk, the mistrust between factions and parties and the collapsed of Khmer Rouge regime. Khmers have suffered a great deal from all these events. If I have a magic wand; what you want me to do with it? Is there a chance we can come together and restore Khmer Empire once again? What can we ask from PM Hun Sen in order for Khmers to get out from poverty, for Khmers to have a better life, for Khmers moving forward?

Umesh Randey is not Thail, but he is Indian and a journalist or reporter. That is all. We are buying his article because it was telling the truth.

There is nothing to do compare with the evil countries, Thailand and Vietnam.

We have to focus on the stupid and dumb PM leader was illegally installed by Vietnamese military forces and master in Hanoi after ousting or arresting a former educated PM Pen Sovan who was against Vietnam control in 1980.

Cambodia is better off without this illegally installed PM Hun Sen, a Vietnamese puppet.

This stupid PM Hun Sen was not elected by the people through the national election registering voters.

Who care what nationality he is. He works the Bangkok post. I want to see him criticize the Thai Royal Family, and then we tell see and tell what kind of the reporter he is. I dare him.

In Cambodia, we criticize our politician from the left as well from the right and the Royal family is not excluded.

In Cambodia, many criticize the politicians, many NGOs and many politicians outside of the country, Human Right activist, and even Global watch, but the STUPID and uneducated Hun Sen is to dumb to see the criticism.

How do you tell a DUMB person to get off the throne and give the the real PM title to a real Khmer who works for the real Khmer people?

Mr: Umesh 3days observation is 99% right on the target,as an un-bias journalism doesn't get any accurate than that.Mr Umesh did a good job of observing any things from beggars to street around the city to more Lexas SUV per capita in the beggars state like Cambodia, considering the poorest state among Asian state rely on donation from donors. He(Umesh) when on to point out that all those money probably didn't get to the poor people that lives in country side and he was right also he point out that Hun cent gangsters attitude blasting his critic which has nothing to do with the summit.Mr:Umesh right on that one as well...I think Umesh right he was no bias...
