Prince Sisowath Thomico (pictured), nephew and personal advisor of ex-King Sihanouk, has come out to defend the ex-king after Mr. Khieu Samphan, ex-president of the presidium of the Khmer Rouge regime, called for the Khmer Rouge Tribunal to summons the ex-king to appear before the court for his role in the Khmer Rouge genocidal crimes.
Prince Thomico, in an interview with Radio France Internationale (RFI), has emphatically denied Sihanouk's role in the Khmer Rouge crimes. He has also claimed that the Cambodian constitutions protect the ex-king from all prosecutions for his role in the Khmer Rouge regime.
According to RFI, in the last two days of hearing, Mr. Ieng Sary and Mr. Khieu Samphan had implicated ex-King Sihanouk. Mr. Ieng Sary, who was the Khmer Rouge foreign minister, had reminded the court of the ex-king's pardon and amnesty given to him. On the other hand, the ex-president of the presidium of the Khmer Rouge regime was puzzled of why the co-prosecutors only charged him for the Khmer Rouge crimes, but did not charge the ex-king.
