Cambodia's trade with Thailand up 9% in 9 months despite recent floods

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- The bilateral trade between Cambodia and Thailand had seen an increase of nine percent in the first nine months of this year although the two neighbors have been suffering the worst flooding since July.

From January to September this year, the bilateral trade was 2.15 billion U.S. dollars, nine percent increase from 1.97 billion U. S. dollars at the same period last year, Jiranan Wongmongkol, director of the Thai Embassy's Foreign Trade Promotion Office in Phnom Penh, told Xinhua over telephone on Sunday.

Cambodia's exports to Thailand were 137 million U.S. dollars, no increase if compared to the same period last year, while Thailand's exports to Cambodia amounted 2.01 billion U.S. dollars, nine percent rise from 1.84 billion U.S. dollars.

Thailand's main products exported to Cambodia include vehicles, petroleum, processed goods, building materials, fruits, and vegetables, while Cambodia primarily exports agricultural products, second hand garments, recyclable metal, and fish to Thailand.

"The two countries' trade ties remain strong even though both sides are hitting by the worst floods," said Jiranan Wongmongkol." We're still optimistic that the bilateral trade will grow around 20 percent this year."

Cambodia's floods had claimed at least 250 human lives and cost the country about 521 million U.S. dollars, the National Committee for Disaster Management said.

I am in total agreement with the comment above. If Cambodia economy growing so much and trade continues to grow as indicated. I wonder why Cambodian seeking job in Malaysia, Thailand and others. I wonder why we cannot sustain ourselve yet we borrowing from China. China probably own Cambodia already. Sorry, Vietnam. You gonna have to fight China for it.

I believe trade with Thailand has increased but it is a one-way increase, ie more imports from Thailand so all the money flow to Thailand. This means that Cambodia's economy is getting worse because more money flow out of the country. If Cambodia export more than import than it is good because we get more money, not lose money.
