The Cambodian government making profit out of the suffering of its own people : Cambodian-American deportees

Re: Asia Profile: Poet and Cambodian-American deportee Kosal Khiev

This issue is heart broken. It destabilizes the strength of Cambodian-American abroad. The Cambodian government found its ways to make profit out of the suffering of its own people by allowing the U.S government to deport to Cambodia. It sounds like a noble thing to do because no country will accept them.

The reality is this: the US government cannot detain them indefinitely if Cambodia didn't accept them. It would be in violation of their constitutional rights. If a man/woman paid for his/her crime, she/he should be set free. Deportation allows the U.S government to hold them on a temporary basis until some governments issued a visa to allow them to go into their country. Vietnam for example, will only take deportees who came to the US after after 1995. Which means that these individuals will most likely not get into trouble because most of them are business owners. Unlike the Cambodian government, they accept everybody who has Cambodian blood related and it doesn't matter when they arrived in the US.

The sad part is, immigration law continues to squeeze harder and harder toward innocent Cambodians who made minor infraction. Imagine seeing a mother being separated from her children for shoplifting, writing bad checks, drink-driving etc. Some might say, well they should not violate the law in the first place. There are many nationalities that violated the law but why did punish them twice? I am not saying Cambodia is a bad country, but how many jobs are available there? How do the leaders view democracy? These young Cambodians don't know anything about Cambodia and many of them were born in the refugee camps in Thailand. Do you think the Cambodian government takes deportees without a fee?

Don't think, that Cambodia make much profits from the deportation of our Khmer brothers to Cambodia.
The US and Cambodian government just want to give you the last chance, that some of the deportee have missed in the US.
In Cambodia, you don't have any bad records, you have the same right like other Cambodian people.
Of course you can live and able work in the US, but with limited possibility, you will always under the control of the state authority, because of your history background, and not allow to make another big mistake.

I think the fact that the cambodian government accepts cambodian immigrants/deportees is a good thing because it is not only encourage other khmer immigrants to be good citizens/residents it also stop the gang problem in the khmer communities across america. Of course most deportees have already served the time for their crimes but with out the consequences of deporting them cambodia, they would probably wouldn't stop continue committing crimes and terrorizing their own communities (khmer communities) in the USA.

I dont care how much cambodia government makes from each deportee sent back. It sure put and end to stupid khmer gangs that were acting like the black american. Also put and end to khmer rival gangs from killing other khmer gangs.

It is not hard to be a law respecting resident. Live healthy, live with dignity.

To Khmere/American:

If you don't like the laws, you lobby the US congress to change it.

Don't try to get Cambodian Gov. involve with the issue. Cambodian Gov. just try to help their own Cambodian people only !!!

Cambodian Gov. can say no to the US request if they want to but they just can say know to your own people.

Is there any Cambodian/American leader try to organize the protest to change the law ????

If it is not, maybe they are scare to exercise their right !!!!

The Vietnamese government did the right thing to protect its own citizens by only accepting deportations of people immigrated to the U.S after 1995. The Cambodian government should do the same, but our officials were not smart and not well educated enough to comprehend the deportation agreement.
I agree that people who committed crimes must be punished, but the law should not be retroactive, meaning it should not deport those who had committed crimes before the law was enacted. It should only deport those who committed crimes after the law was introduced.
Now, about 2000 Cambodians are waiting to be deported and who know how many more will be deported. At the end, many of them will be deported, separated from their children and wives for the crimes they have committed before the law was introduced. This is not fair. I don't mind if the U.S has the same agreement with every country, but the fact is that the agreement varies from country to country, and some country got a better treatment than others, like Vietnam only accept deportations of those who came to America after 1995 and this means that not many of them will be deported because most of them are businesspeople and students-well educated Vietnamese who are less likely to commit crimes.
The other thing is I know that Cambodia, especially the Cambodian officials, has benefited from deportations of Khmer-Americans a lot. I read somewhere that first Cambodia did not agree to the agreement but Americans officials coerced them, and coupled with a lot of financial payments, they agreed. So, I agree that the Cambodian government has made profit out of the suffering of its own people.

Cambodia has much more pressing issues to deal with than to worry about fighting with the Americans over the deportation.

No crime, no deportation.

With crime, comes deportation. At least you are not sent to the KR camp!

It is nice to sit infront of your laptop to voice your philosophical oppionion about a person life. Have you met the deportees when they returned? What kind of job they are doing? How many committed sucidal? How many working the street to survive? by the way, the other flip side; Cambodian American continues to get weaker as more Cambodian being deported. Cambodian American only strong if there are more Cambodian American in United States. Look at the Vietnamese, they are close to a million population already, they own shopping malls, businesses, they run for political office in America. Guess what, they will influence American policy in favor of Vietnamese back home. How Cambodian American do that if they are being deported? Cambodia is about to loose the land it currently living in now. As you can see many Vietnamese businessowner bought up Cambodian land, Khmer tourist industry run by Vietnamese businessowner etc. I dont want to say the government run by Vietnamese but I can say that Cambodian government is influence by Vietnamese government. The issue with deportation, you don't just deport one person that committed a crime, most likely the entire family will move back to Cambodia. How many Cambodian will remain in America to help influence American policy to help future Cambodia? America win in this battle of deporting immigrant back home. Each deportee has family so we talking 3-5 people at minimum moving back. Imagine, after they deported all of these hardcore gangster you are talking that paid for their crime already. Who is next? It will be the lesser crime such as shoplifting, writing bad check etc. In 1996, these were added as felony. You can say, dont committed crime but you know full well, each and every saturday or sunday when Cambodian get together or go to wedding. I can guarantee you that they were drinking. Imagine, the police just sit in the corner waiting for them. How many more Cambodian being deported to put light bulb in your head that you as Cambodian government should revisit the agreement. lobby US government, that is a bullshit excuses to push the issue aside. If Cambodia government stop issue visa, how will they get deported?

They can't stop issue visa moron..This is part of the business making deal. You make from the US per head and you make more monies from the family if they want to remain in the USA..

Why is there any body in this blog support the protest to change the laws ?????

If you don't like it lobby to change it !!

Vietnamese do not spend their time and money to topple their own government like most of Cambodian. They just learn how to live within the system.

That is the different between Vietnamese and Khmere.

All Khmere need to learn from them.

Agree. Let's accept our differences and get along. United we're strong, divided we're played into enemies' hands.

Why don't you 2 blowjobers above give each other a blowjob while your're at it. A bunch of bullshit 6:34 AM, you're telling me that when Youn slaughtered each other like animals during the Vietnam War, that they weren't spending their times and money trying to topple each other government? You're telling me that when some sellout south Vietnamese defectors trying to topple their own government by taking side with the Viecong gooks, they weren' spending their time and money to topple the south Vietnamese government? You're telling that some Vietnamese, aren't trying to topple Hanoi government as I type this? You're an idiot. There are shit load of Vietnamese trying as I speak. If you go to Little Saigon in Westminster, California, Vietnamese newspapers are printing anit-Hanoi article almost on the daily basis. If you go to Ballaire in Houston Texas, Vietnamese newspapers are doing the same damn thing. They're just as out spoken against this communist government as Khmer are very outspoken against Hanoi's puppet Hun Sen. The different is, you try to do that in Vietnam, you and your family would be fucked. So most don't dare to protest or speakout. Khmer don't need to learn from Youn just to become theives like them. I work with them long enough to understand their arrogance personality and cutthroat competitiveness and selfishness traits.
