IMF: Cambodia’s Economic Growth Reaches 6.7 Percent This Year

AKP Phnom Penh, October 13, 2011 –This year, Cambodia’s economic growth would be at 6.7 percent, up from 6.5 percent in the previous prediction, International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s Regional Economic Outlook said today.

According to the new forecast; in ASEAN; Cambodia would rank number 2 after Laos (8.3 percent). Indonesia would achieve an economic growth of 6.4 percent, Vietnam 5.8 percent, Myanmar 5.5 percent, Singapore 5.3 percent, Malaysia 5.2 percent, the Philippine 4.7 percent, Thailand 3.5 percent and Brunei 2.8 percent.

On Tuesday, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance H.E. Keat Chhon predicted Cambodia’s economic growth at only 6 percent this year.

The floods and uncertain economic situation in America and the EU, the two main markets for Cambodian products, have affected Cambodia’s export, therefore the economic growth that Cambodia had expected at 7 percent would go down to 6 percent in 2011, he said.

In mid September, the Asian Development Bank said Cambodian economy in 2011 would reach 6.8 percent.
