Chinese helicopters set to be bought by Cambodia are to be used for both disaster management and fighting terrorism, a high-ranking official said yesterday.
The Kingdom agreed to acquire Chinese-made Z-9 helicopters for US$195 million in one of 26 memorandums of understanding agreed to by the two countries on Saturday. The agreements came as a delegation of Chinese officials visited the Kingdom, led by Politburo Standing Committee member Zhou Yongkang.
Minister of Economy and Finance, Keat Chhon, said at a ceremony in Phnom Penh yesterday that the craft were “necessary”.
“Those Z-9 helicopters will be used to manage disaster and to fight against terrorism,” Keat Chhon said. He did not comment on the number of helicopters that would be acquired or when they would arrive in the Kingdom.
Defence Ministry spokesman Chhum Socheat said yesterday that he was aware of the government’s plan to purchase the helicopters but had no detailed information so far.
“We don’t have enough helicopters and the existing ones were old, therefore we need to buy more,” he said.

These helicopters will probably be used to shuttle the corrupt to casinos and personal errands.
As for use to counter terrorism... my ASS!
Terrorism in Cambodia is one who oppose the current regime or the un-arms protesters who may protest against the current leaders, after the dictatorship regime around the world disappeared one by one, the remaining dictators have the reason to worry about it.
In recent history Cambodia army haven't been in rescue mission or fighting any terrorist for this reason we believe the helicopters just for crashing people who rise against the corrupt officials.
The definition of modern day warfare is no place for such slow flying birds, this kind of helicopters is only fit to one definition is for escape from angry innocent civilian.
Fighter jets can land on the specific run way, but this kind of helicopter can land on roof top and any where you wish.
PM Hun Sen make wise investment that may save his family one day from the angry Cambodian seeking justice for what they suffer in the hand of his regime.
195 mil can buy few sukhoi su or a dozen of J-10 that can bombs enemy target just less than 30 minutes. or this kind of fighter jet not make sense .
Rumor That Hun Sen has about 800 million dollars in his Singapore bank account and another 100 million dollars in a Switzerland account. And Hun Sen purchased a mountain property in Cuba for his retirement. It didn't surprise that Hun Sen is rich, but that he was rich to that extent. one must wondering if there was some truth to it or it was just rumors and exaggeration.
In the case if he was force out of the office he will have the comfortable twilight years in Cuba and nobody can touch him it is a very well plan.
It is rumors and exaggeration. On facts what-so-ever.
One copter for each CPP bending committee members. 5 copters for Hun's family and their valises.1 copter to share for both Sangharajas. I would say 20 copters are enough to make good escape! Vietnam will not let Hun Sen using Koh Tral to set up resistance base so he has to go to Koh Tralach if he wants to have Khmer version of Formosa.
