A senior Cambodian official said yesterday, Wednesday 10th August, that newly-elected Thai PM Yingluck Shinawatra (pictured) will soon lead a delegation of cabinet ministers to visit Cambodia.

Mr. Phay Siphan, Secretary of State and Spokesman for the Council of Ministers, said Mrs. Yingluck will lead a delegation of ministers to Cambodia to conduct bilateral talks with Prime Minister Hun Sen on a wide range of issues, including strengthening relations and cooperation between the two countries, as well as discussing the ongoing border conflict between the two countries.

Mr. Phay Siphan said the Cambodian government had followed the recommendations from Prime Minister Hun Sen made during the meeting of cabinet ministers on 5th August to increase cooperations with Mrs. Yingluck government and to refrain from attacking her government in the media as has been done with the previous Abhisit Vejjajiva’s government.

He said bilateral solutions to the conflict between the two countries must be based on mutual benefits of the two countries. However, the issue of the disputed lands surrounding the Preah Vihear temple, which is in the hand of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), will remain in the hand of the ICJ and will not be discussed bilaterally.

In a similar reciprocation, the newly-installed Thai defence minister, Gen. Yutthasak Sasipapa, had urged both Mr. Hun Sen and Mrs. Yingluck to hold talks to resolve the border disputes.

In another good gesture, Cambodian defence minister and foreign minister had invited their Thai counterparts to pay a visit to the kingdom to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries which was seriously damaged by the hardline approach of the previous Abhisit Vejjajiva’s government. The new Thai Defence Minister Satthasak had also invited Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Banh to a lunch in Bangkok, saying he and Gen. Tea Banh were old friends, but Gen. Tea Banh said had not accepted the offer yet.

A meeting between the two PMs will help smooth the relations between the two countries, but will not help resolving the borders overnight. Both governments are courting each other, but one or both have to make concessions to get the border dispute resolved.

Well a meeting between Yingluck and Hun Sen would only be good if Yingluck tells Hun Sen to start a Miss.Cambodia contest where the winner gets to represent Cambodia in Miss.Universe. I hope she tells him that Cambodia will never developed and be known to the world unless they compete like Thailand does.
