Cambodia’s Senate Approves Draft Law on Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Tri-junction Point of Land Boundaries

The Cambodian lower house has approved the bill one 16th June, 2011.

AKP Phnom Penh, July 8, 2011–Cambodia’s Senate held its session on July 7, approving a draft law on an agreement on tri-junction point of land boundaries of Cambodia [called the Emerald Triangle], Laos and Vietnam with 43 votes in favour among 44 present.

Speaking at the session, presided over by Samdech Sisowath Chivan Monirak, acting president of Senate, H.E. Mrs. Ty Borasy, Chairwoman of Commission on Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Media, referring to the draft law, the agreement become a judicial foundation of the three countries to define their specific land borderline and ensure the on-the-field demarcation of the land border.

“The law will help strengthen the solidarity and fraternal relationship for turning the development triangle area into the one of peace, friendship, and cooperation with the sustainability as Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen said, “I want border people to become rich and live with fearlessness, and to make the border area development,” she said.

The agreement will promote the cooperation between the law enforcement agencies of the three countries on preventing the crossing-border criminal acts via the information and experience exchanges, being aimed at preserving peace, stability and security along the three countries’ border, as well as in the region, she added.

The agreement on tri-junction point of land boundaries of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam was signed in Hanoi, Vietnam, on August 26, 2008.

The draft law on the agreement was adopted in the Cambodia’s national assembly’s session held on June 16 with 83 votes in favour.
