12 of Thai F16s were donated by Singaporean government from the Singapore army training school and some of them have been flying more than 10,000 Hrs. Lately Thailand purchased BM-30 rocket launchers from China. A rocket cost $4000.00 for the 40km range and for the 150Km range cost $16,000.00 US dollars.
Thailand government's bank account not sound as it could be if the soldier is on duty they have to pay 450 baht as the bonus.

Davan,
I like your assessment of the looming perils ahead of us if we don't reform our military situation.
I really don't care what your political view is of our country or the color of your skin, however we must united in defending our national border and interests both east and west.
Our country have been at peace, relatively speaking, for more than 22 years now since the withdrawal of the Vietnamese troops from our land. We as a nation didn't pay too much attention to revamp our military due to obvious reasons. We focus mainly on economic growth, infrastructure, and reducing poverty. However, we can not neglect military reform. Until recently, I was embarrassed to see our soldiers with rusty AKs and sandals facing a fully equipped Thai army. We have to take a hard look at the current situation and set priority of what is the clear and present danger at this juncture. I think increasing military budget and modernized our military is a top priority. It doesn't mean that we have to sacrifice our daily living, but taking a small step toward reform. Over time, it would be very fruitful. God bless Cambodia and our people.

Well said, Great Khmer Empire!!!!. We can' build ourselves a nice home, if can't protect it from thieves. It would be pointless. I live in Texas, USA. Almost Every home have gun for self defense, regardless, if you live in a huge acreage farmland or a small mobile home. The right is there to defense yourself. As a nation, if Cambodia neglect to defend her territory from thieves to the east or west, Cambodia will only get smaller. Cambodia cannot afford that. If we Cambodia begin to take thing seriously in defending our turf, Siem or Youn would think twice about trying to rob and steal from us.

The author must have forget that the Thais whooped our ass and took our land. So I don't see how he got his assessment. All Thailand need to do is fly into our airspace and fire at will and Cambodia will be destroyed. Did you forget 1979 when Vietnamese tanks rolled in. For hundred of years we lost every battle to save our land. So it is Cambodia that is still using the cold war era method for protection.

5:40Am,
With all due respect, where and when did the Thai "whooped" our assess? Can you elaborate that and substantiate with concrete evidence? And please no personal attack. I would appreciate your courteous response.
As far as 1979 goes, it's obvious why it only took 2 weeks for the Viet army to invade. The mass population were against the regime. I don't need to go into details. We all live through it if you're old enough at least for my generation.

Vietnamese were able to go into Cambodia, but they could not control the country side and many parts of the country. Vietnamese solders were being killed daily by Cambodians. That is how I remember.

Thais can not control the south of Thailand. How can they able to control Cambodia? The US went to Vietnam, but they had to retreat. This is other example that big and better arms don't mean a thing.

Davan's assessment is very rational. We have to discuss about our military capability based on facts, not based on propaganda and overstatement because it is dangerous. Comments in previous posts have always overstated the capability of our military to the point of propaganda or lying. This is dangerous. To fight a war we must know our strength and the strength of our enemy. Certainly, the truth hurts, but we must admit that our military capability is no match to the Thai military capability. As such we must admit this and try to build up our military and upgrade the skills of our soldiers and educate our officers more. We know our soldiers are brave and fierce fighters, but they lack the know how, military strategy, the weapons and the motivation to fight because they have not fed very well because of rampant corruption within the military.

...lack the know how and military strategy? Wrong, pal! I think that the best thing and the only thing that Cambodia have and that the only reason why Thais could not gain any ground with Cambodians in the front line. The Cambodian Army has the best art of the general. Anything else I would agree with you but not this one-military strategy.
