Thailand's show of force and weaponry along the border areas

The Thai Army moved many tanks like these to the Cambodian-Thai borders. These Thai tanks and troops have been seen reinforced to the Preah Vihear frontline on 13th February, 2011.

Cambodian soldiers and commanders at the Preah Vihear frontlines said that in the last few days the Thai Army had staged a show of force and weaponry by reinforcing more troops and heavy weaponry along the Cambodian-Thai borders. The sources said that the situations at Preah Vihear seemed a bit tense due to the Thai reinforcements.

However, Gen. Chea Dara, commanders of Cambodian Fourth Military Region in charge of the Preah Vihear Operations, told RFA that Thailand's show of force and weaponry did not scare Cambodian frontline soldiers. "They can show off whatever they want. Cambodian troops are defending their own territory. Whoever encroached into our territory, we will use our self-defence rights to resolve (the encroachments) as has been shown many days and months already", he said.

The Bangkok Post reported on 5th March that the Thai Army had accused Cambodia of deploying more troops and heavy weaponry in the disputed areas. However, Cambodia denied the charges, instead saying it was the Thai side who reinforced more troops and heavy weaponry to the areas.

Cambodia and Thailand are at loggerhead of how to proceed with border talks, with Thailand insisting on a bilateral approach where as Cambodia maintained that all future talks must be witnessed and participated by a third party. "No! Don't come to have a closed door meeting with us and then threaten (intimidate) us. No way! Now let's go to Jakarta. Indonesia has scheduled a meeting of the (Cambodian-Thai) defence ministers over there. Chairmen of border committees (of both countries) must all go to a meeting over there and Indonesia will act as a host", he said.

The Bankok Post reported that Thailand had proposed a bilateral meeting of the Joint Boundary Commission this month but Cambodia has rejected that proposal insisting on a multilateral participation. However, Cambodia said it will only participate in bilateral talks with Thailand only if the Thai parliament approved/ratified the three agreements reached during several bilateral meetings which have been shelved by the Thai parliament in the last two and a half years.
