People living in the provincial capital of Kampong Speu province have flocked to see rare giant gold fish raised in a private museum in Chambok village, Vallis commune in Samrong Torng district of Kampong Speu province.
The locals called these fish "Trey Ross Meas" or golden Trey Ross, one of Cambodia's fish species. People said they have never seen this kind of giant fish in Cambodia before. They look like sharks, but are very docile, harmless and friendly and people can touch and play with them without feeling in danger of being attacked by them.
Mr. Meth Sereipheap, director of the private museum, said the fish are called "Trey Ross Meas" or golden Trey Ross and were imported from Malaysia. The oldest male and female fish couple are 8 years old, weighing 101 kg each and measuring 1.94 metres long. Another younger couple was 5 years old, weighing 70 kg each and measuring 1.5 metres. He said these fish eat a fair bit amount of fish, but he said that museum staff try to limit their daily feed to about 5 kg of fish only. He said if fed properly, these fish will produce baby fish in another 15 years.
