Vox Populi: Again Cambodia has woken up ASEAN from sleep

Again, Cambodia has woken up ASEAN from sleep.

Cambodia should choose China as a partner. America had proven to be ineffective as partner. America had failed to stop the spread of communism in Indo-China through the defeat of the Vietnam War, which lead to the rise in power of the Khmer Rouge (KR). China also had its hand dirty by supporting the creation of the KR. After judging and balancing the wrongs on both America and China, Cambodia would much better relying on China. China is a growing superpower, rival that of America. China played a major role in Cambodia's developments, while America is more concerned about the politics of Democracy and Human Rights. If America wishes to see Cambodia becoming less dependent on China, America should support Cambodia in developments and condemn Thailand for its aggression toward Cambodia.

It's a bottom of the problem in the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.

The U.S and China play a big role in this conflict. What's so sad is small and weak countries like Cambodia has been held hostage by giant and powerful countries like US and China.

It's a real world we live in. Thailand is a puppet of the US. Thailand has no desire to make war against Cambodia but political environment in Thailand plus the US's motivation, Thai has to stand up against its own friends and neighbour. ASEAN has to decide and show solidarity in this manner.

Should Vietnam, Laos, Burma, and other ASEAN members join force with Cambodia to punish Thailand? They should, indeed. It's a legitimate and it also shows solidarity in ASEAN to protect peace in region.

The US will always try to stir up trouble for economic reason and its interests around the world. But when it gets too hot to handle the US will abandon the ship and retreat back to their country. The US will leave the world in a big mess after it has created the problems. So I think this is what's going to happen again pretty soon in Asian countries. As far as picking side, Cambodia should balance it out. Why not use its rich resources to rebuild and stabilize our country and at the same token we don't want to be dependent on them either. We need to be on our own feet too and educate our people to run the country.

There shouldn't be any doubt of China playing a major role in Cambodia. Cambodia and China had been allies for over 2,000 years, dating back since the early Funan kingdom in 1st century A.D. Of course, Cambodia is no where compare to China nowadays, but back in the old days, Khmer Empire was a worthy opponent of China. Fortunately, these two decided to be friends, instead of enemies. Khmer civilization played a major role in southeast Asia, while Chinese civilization played a major role in east Asia. There shouldn't be any surprise of their alliances. Since ancient times, China and Khmer Empire were great partner in trade. There were time when China was down and Khmer was there to help pick China up, and vice versa.

Regardless of how much America wishes to see Cambodia distance herself from China, Cambodia will always have that invisible strong bonds. If Cambodia was clever, she should try to benefit from both of these giants of the east, China and the west, America. It's better to have more friends than a few. Cambodia is making friends with some of the most hated nations in the world, like North Korea and Iran because Cambodia stance itself as a nation of neutrality. In time of needs, more friends is better. America has no right to tell Cambodia who she should be friends with.

Hello Mr Mong Palatino,

I'm Khmer, currently living in MASS, USA.

I am absolutely agree with you on that. It's only 1.8 sq. miles. Why don't both Kampuchea and Thailand use this plot of land to grow veggies for their own people and sell the veggie for the benefit of both people? That was just my opinion.

Yes, the reason behind these propaganda are motivated by greed and baseless patriotism on both sides, especially, the Thais. The temple was built by the Khmer King (Khmer Expire) a long time ago. Both Thais and Khmer should live in the present day, not the past. I read an article that was written by a Thai and he said that the Preah Vihear temple was discovered by the Thai King, I just think that all Thais got their history wrong or they are just plain ignorant people. Every or just about every temples in Thailand were built by the Khmer Kings, for example, the Phimai temple in Nakorn Ratchasima [Nokor Reacha Seima in Khmer] province.

Thanks
Savy Kennedy Dashwood Hang.

The current Cambodian-Thai conflict is not about the 1.8 sq. miles of land, it is about nationalism and the Preah Vihear temple itself. The Thai govt. was facing immense pressures from nationalist groups at home who are dreaming of taking Preah Vihear temple back. We must remember that the 1.8 sq. miles of land is a lifeline for access to the temple from the Cambodian side. If the Thai can take the 1.8 sq. miles of that land they can prevent access from the Cambodian side to the temple. If they succeed, Cambodia's ownership of the temple is at risk because we have to ask permission from Thailand to get access to the temple. If Thailand can cut access to the temple from the Cambodian side, then it is like they own the temple itself.

Don't guess, Mr. Mong Palatino, your analysis is no any basic proof.
As I know Prime Minister Hun Sen, he is not interested in making himself more popular in Cambodia by doing such this risky thing.
No matter what happened, he's still the Prime Minister of Cambodia forever. He don't need to get support by using this war. But, for Abhisit, yes he does [make war] in order to survive his government.
Hun Sen has so many businesses and own many things in Cambodia. He might worry about the economy and his business much more than political things.

Since Thailand has invaded Cambodia, our economy plummeted at the same time as the world economic crisis occurs.
He has enough force to destroy someone who's against him.
No need to gain any support from Cambodians.
You see, even in 1993, there was the UN there, but it can't take him out of the power.
He was still the second Prime Minister and then become the first prime minister by toppling the first prime minister.
Got it?

I agree with this idea.

3:52 AM, you were 90% correct. And the author and others were wrong. To me, the land and temple always belong to us Khmers. We Khmers do not act out of patriotism, just to protect what is ours and to prove that we are fed up with being stepped on, of bullying and being manipulated, while all of these were happening on our own soil. Plus the author said he doesn't understand why we Khmers go to war for this small land. Well, what happen if your neighbor come to take half of your house with or without your permission? Better yet, come in your house and use your clothes' closet and throw away your shirts and pants as he pleases. Plus what good is a house when your front porch is on someone else's property? Just like we Khmers enter our own temple from the backyard. Now how low do you think we are? The temple belong to us and the land around it. To have a clean and prosperous place we need enough breathing room to garden veggies, build storage and have room to let the kids and friends to run around a bit. Stop say that we Khmers have issues- this is a damn Thai idiotic issue!!!!!! Trade Preah Vihear temple for Angkor Wat? Over my dead body!!!! These Thai nationalists need to be assassinated!! And why the Thai PM did not arrest these nationalists for creating this kind of false statements and pour gasoline into a burning building?? That of course because this PM want the to house burn!!!! And most importantly, the author knew whose land it belong to, but act as if he is not taking side.

To me, I think ASEAN is very useless and fang-less, toothless. Why they can't resolve this issue? Because Thailand is the oldest member in that Organization which led this to being biased toward Cambodia, like someone had mentioned below:
"The new ASEAN-II can be created for Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Mynamar, East Timore if the old ASEAN is not happy with the new members. Create this new member organisation just to piss Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines off. I bet they will not going to be happy with this. I'd suggest this to happen, see how they like that.

Khmer PP,"

UN or World organization should initiate this right away or before it is too late. Like HUN SEN said, this could lead to a regional instability. Do you think Cambodia is afraid of Thailand?? No! You got to remember that the three countries that signed deal together were Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. These countries are looking after each others' back. Thailand could bring its country to be broken into pieces just like former Yugoslavia.

Khmer leaders they only care about their families, relatives and their power and money. They don't care about the whole nation or Cambodia country at all. They rather lost lands than lost their power and money!

12:27 PM, We know that America will support Thailand all the way, comes what may. Thailand is America closes ally in Asia or Southeast Asia, so it will never support Cambodia. This is one of the reasons why Cambodia turn to China. If America wants Cambodia to be closest to it, then America should tend to the Cambodian needs.

Why do Kos Trol, sea and lands proximately over 10 000 km2 have been lost to Vietnam by who treaty? Why don’t Cambodia goverment transparencies explain to Cambodia army at front line and the whole nation about this? Why don't they include this into education system? Why?

Cambodian armies are fighting at front line for 4.6 km2 and what's about over 10 000km2 of Cambodia to Vietnam. Nobody dare to talk about it! Why? Cambodian armies you are decide the fate of your nation, Cambodian army as well as Cambodian people must rethink about this again and again. Is it fair?

Kos Trol, Sea and lands over 10 000km2 have been lost to Vietnam by who treaty at 1979 to 1985 treaty! Treaty! Cambodian army at front line as well as all Cambodian people must rethink again about these issues. Are Cambodian army fighting to protect the Cambodia Nation or protect a very small group that own big lands, big properties or only protecting a small group rather in the real name of protecting Khmer nation?

Cambodian army at front line suffer under rain, wind, bullets, bombs, lack of foods, lack of nutrition, their families have no health care help, no securities after they die but a very small group eat well, sleep well, sleep in first class hotel with air conditioning with young girls message, have super health care from oversea medical treatment, they are billionaires, millionaires who sell out the country to be rich and make Cambodian people suffer everyday as Cambodian people know already.

Who signed the treaty 1979-1985 that result lost over 10 000 km2 of Cambodia??? Why don't they transparency inform all Cambodian and Cambodian army at front line about these issues? Why don't include Kos Trol (Kos Trol size is bigger than the whole Phom Phen with heap of great natural resources) in education system in Cambodia.

Look at Hun Sen families, relatives; friends are billionaires, millionaires where do they get the money from if we all just get out of war with empty hands? Hun Sen always say in his speech Cambodia just get up from war, just get up from Zero with empty hands and how come they are billionaires, millionaires but 90% innocent Cambodian people are so poor struggling with living every day.

Smart Khmer girl Ms. Rattana Keo,

THE BEST WAY TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM
AND AVOID MORE PEOPLE DIED . WE MUST ASK HUN SEN AND ABHISIT TO BE A COW BOY AND LET THEM HAVE A GUN BY HIS CHOICE THAN BOTH OF THEM GO
TO PHASH VIHAR AND LET THEM SHOOT
EACH OTHER. HUN SEN HAVE ONLY ONE EYE AND ABHISIT HAVE TWO EYE BUT WHO IS COME OUT THE WINNER CAN CONTROL ALL THAT WAY THE WAR WILL BE OVER THAN ALL PEOPLE WILL BE SAFE.
