Thailand has abandoned its demand that Cambodia remove its flag from Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak pagoda and dismantle the pagoda, the issue that triggered the clashes on Friday and Saturday, in two meetings with Cambodian commanders yesterday and today.

This is in contrast to Thai PM Abhisit Vejjajiva's declaration that Thailand will go to war with Cambodia if Cambodia refused to remove the flag. True to Mr. Abhisit's threat, the fighting broke out on Friday and Saturday which killed and wounded many soldiers on both sides. Military commanders from both sides met yesterday and agreed to a ceasefire.

The Cambodian side claimed that 32 Thai soldiers were killed, many wounded and 5 captured. The Thai side had claimed that 64 Cambodian soldiers were killed, 16 tanks and 4 BM-21 rocket launchers were destroyed. The Cambodian side has dismissed the Thai claims, saying that only 2 Cambodians, one soldier and one civilian, were killed and 24 wounded, 18 soldiers, 3 temple conservation officials and 3 civilians.
