Long Beach police today were looking for a witness to a Jan. 22 liquor store robbery and shooting death that was captured on surveillance video.

Sor Phouam 53, a Cambodian immigrant who was well-known in the neighborhood, was killed in a holdup at P&B Liquor/Junior Market at 1953 E. Fourth St. about 8 p.m. that day.

Long Beach police on Wednesday released a new eight-second video clip that shows the face of the witness, which they had blurred in previously released video footage of the robbery and killing.

Footage of the robbery in progress shows one man pointing a large-caliber revolver inches from Phouam's face.

Two men entered the store that night and approached the counter where a male customer was in the process of completing his purchase, police said.

One suspect took a chrome handgun from his waistband and pointed it at Phouam.

The customer tried to leave, but was stopped by the suspect with the gun, who demanded his money. After taking the customer's money, the suspect turned back to Phouam and fatally shot him.

The suspects were described as men in their late 20s or early 30s. Video shows the gunman wore a black shirt with white lettering on it. The other suspect wore a dark shirt. The suspects fled east toward Cherry Avenue.

Earlier this month, resident Philip Payne said the killing of Phouam was senseless violence.

``He's just an innocent victim and it's such a tragedy in society today that this happens,' Payne told KCAL9. ``It's like a family community, lots of kids in the area, and to have people just randomly killing innocent, unarmed people is tragic.'

The county Board of Supervisors has approved a $10,000 reward leading to a conviction in the case.

A hotline has been set up at (562) 570-7247 for anyone wishing to contact homicide investigators David Rios or Roger Zottneck.

Callers can remain anonymous.
