Khmer-Americans protest against Cambodia-Thai dispute

West Seattle/White Center protest highlights Cambodia/Thailand dispute

February 12, 2011 | In West Seattle news, White Center | 9 Comments

You’ve heard a lot about what’s going on in the Middle East – but have you heard about what’s going on in Southeast Asia? A border clash between Cambodia and Thailand is about to come to a head in front of the United Nations, and today Cambodian-Americans came to West Seattle and White Center for a demonstration aimed at bringing it to your attention and demanding the U.S. government get involved. West Seattle Blog/White Center Now contributor Deanie Schwarz noticed the protest, took these photos and talked to spokesperson Sokmakara Hang, who explained that the demonstrators came from all over the state, and came here because this area has the state’s highest concentration of Cambodian-Americans. They stood on corners all around 16th/Roxbury:

Also on hand was Meach Sovannara from the Khmer Post Media Center in Long Beach (Calif.). The dispute is over a border area near the Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is more than a millennium old. The Cambodian-Americans say the most recent skirmishes killed Cambodian soldiers, and are demanding that the Thai government stop what they call an “invasion.” They want United Nations intervention as well as President Obama and the rest of the international community. According to this story from the Bangkok Post, this issue will be brought to the UN Security Council on Monday, and reportedly Cambodia will claim it’s at war with Thailand. There’s more background on the century-long conflict over the temple in this Jakarta Post story.

Over ten Thousand Khmers at USA but only 100 khmer turn up for this. That's indicated khmer American don't care about their original country. They are not united as one for protection their previous country.

That is very sad for Cambodia.

Whaaoaoo...hold on there, 1:57 AM. If those KhmerAmerican protesting against Thailand agression toward Cambodia, what does that telling you about the love for their homeland. I don't think majority of Khmer living in America are sellout. I never consider myself a sellout. I was a first child in my family to be borned in America. My parents came to America in the early 80's. I'm always proud to be Khmer. My Khmer isn't a great as I wanted to be, but I try. I am doing my part to show support for my root, even if that meant typing up my opinions and thought on what matter to Cambodia. I also don't think Khmer in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, or any other part of the world are turning their backs about what is happening in Cambodia. What is the best thing for them to do? They're trying to balance both sides of the world without leaning too much on one side. You shouldn't make such conclusion. We're all Khmer, anything good or bad happen to our country effects us all.

I agree 4:22am. Just because there aren't that many KhmerAmerican protesting about what is happening between Khmer and Siem, doesn't mean they don't care. Khmer population in America don't live in one bunch up group like Vietnamese or Chinese, as in China Town or Little Saigon. The largest Khmer in America is in Cambodia Town within the city of Long Beach, California. They may not be out there protesting, but they are very well aware of the situation in Cambodia. They're talking and discussing about the issue that effects Cambodia all the times. They are very supportive of Cambodia fighting back the Thai invasion of Phrea Vihear. There shouldn't be any doubt about some Khmer who don't have love for their homeland.

This site should be named
ថៃឩបនីយកម្ម which means Siamization. The sole purpose of this site is to help Thai in swallowing Khmer territory. One of the post asked plainly: If the Vietnames can take a lot of lands from Khmer why not the Thai,is it fair that Khmer soldier chases away only the Thais but not the Viets.
This site also posted the fake interview with Gen.Srey Deok.
So all Khmer readers, please be aware of this fact. Suppose that khmer really lost land in the Eastern border,is that give Siam the right to grab Khmer land as well? what a good neighbor!

The protest is ridiculous. It will not do any good. It is only a distraction.

How is that a distraction 8:14 AM? Stop making smartass comments and start saying something intelligence. I thought Siem can bark, let us hear it. Fucking Siem dogs.

Woa-hoah!
You people are confused!
I was at the Rally in White Center. About a day before the rally, I was called by the guy, as you can see, in the second picture. He has a red and grey jacket and wears that hat. Well anyway, I was called by him and he told me to come. So I did.

For a thing that was actually made about a day before it happened, was very VERY big.

The whole thing was the make Obama do something, as it said, on the same picture, to the right it said, "Change We can Believe in. Stop Thailand Invasion Now. President Barack Obama, Stop the Invasion."

That's what it said, we wanted to get Obama's attention, as it's being ignored by the media.
