Cambodian military sources told DAP News that a Cambodian commander and a Thai commander had engaged in a heated verbal exchange after the Thai commander accused 5 Cambodian troops of secretly sneaking into Thai territory to cut barbed wires around a Thai military camp at 8:10 p.m on Thursday night at Phnom Trop, 5km east of Preah Vihear temple.
A senior Cambodian commander told DAP News that a Thai commander had telephoned him at around 8:10 p.m and angrily accused 5 Cambodian soldiers of sneaking into Thai territory to cut the barbed wires laid around their camp. The Cambodian commander flatly rejected the Thai accusation, saying that at this time all of his troops are asleep already so no one dare to sneak into Thai territory.
The Cambodian commander said the situation had heightened a bit after the verbal exchanges but he said Cambodian troops are ordered to remain calm waiting until the arrival of the Asean (Indonesian) observers. The commander said the Thai side is making excuses to provoke a fight at a time Unesco officials are travelling to the area to assess the damages to Preah Vihear temple caused by Thai artillery shells fired during the armed clashes from 4-7 February.
Prime Minister said publicly on the same day that Cambodian troops have been ordered to show the utmost restraint and not to respond to Thai provocations, even when they threw grenades or fired rockets into Cambodian territory. He, however, had ordered Cambodian troops to shoot to kill if Thai soldiers cross into Cambodian territory, he added.
