Prime Minister Hun Sen's eldest and favourite son, Hun Manet, has been promoted to a major general and appointed as Deputy Commander of Royal Cambodian Army (ground forces) by royal decree No. 033833 on 3rd January. Hun Manet was appointed by a sub-decree signed by his father, Prime Minister Hun Sen, on 30th December 2010 before the appointment was made official by a royal decree signed by King Sihamoni on 3rd January.

This is a second promotion for Hun Manet in three months, after he was promoted to a brigadier general and appointed as Deputy Commander of Mr. Hun Sen's Bodyguard Unit on top of his other role as Commander of the Anti-Terrorism Unit.

The promotion ceremony was presided over by Defence Minister Tea Banh at the Defence Ministry on the morning of 3rd January.

Hun Manet graduated from the United States prestigious West Point Military Academy. He received his Masters degree from Georgetown University in the United States and a Ph.D from Bristol University in England.

I think he is not like his father being educated in the West. He is more sympathetic to western democracy than dictatorship. He can't do much now due to his father is still running the country. He has to wait his turn.

Hun Sen is grooming Hun Manet to take over his job as PM in the future. I know Hun Sen Manet has a good education, but his qualifications are in economics, not military. This show that Hun Sen is preparing for a succession. Also he does not trust anyone, so he has to appoint his son as commander of the army and his bodyguard unit to protect his life from assassinations and coups.

Don't expect too much from Hun Manet no matter how much education he has received from the western world. Just worry about the education he has received and continues to receive from his father, MP Hun Sen.

Cambodia is second North Korea in the making where a position of power is passed from father to son.

The Hun's dynasty is preparing the ground for the eventual succession of leadership and power. Eventually it will surround itself with those they can trust to serve their interests and not those of Cambodians and Cambodia.

A new era of a real King is being created! The Hun Dynasty will eventually rule over the land of Angkor and this alone is a testament that all kings come from human families and are not sacred!

Hun Sen is strategically positioning his son to take over Tea Bahn spot and ultimately works his way to become the next Prime Minister of Cambodia. If I'm not mistaken, the next election is 2012, so it's a possibility that Hun Monet could be the next man after Hun Sen. Hun Monet promotion to 2 stars general is too soon and too sudden. This is no doubt a special favorite from father Hun Sen. Hun Sen is feeling insecure of his next winning in an election, Hanio can only do some much for Hun Sen to win, so it would be no-brainer for Hun Sen to give his seat to his son.

After that being said, aside from the opposition party candidates, I cannot see anyone in CPP(assuming Hun Monet will be a member of CPP) who is more qualify to be next prime minister of Cambodia than Hun Monet. Cambodia desperately need a good leader, a role model that will bring Cambodia to the right image. The current leaders of Cambodia lack educations, dreams, and visions to carry Cambodia forward. They are too concern their own interests. This lead to corruptions and other problems that hinder progress. Political partys are too divided. If and when Hun Monet become Prime Minister, this will be one of his greatest challenge, uniting Cambodian, seperate party but one Cambodia. His other greatest challenge is to politically distance himself from Hanoi, Vietnam so Cambodia can be truly free from a parasitic foreign influence who hoping and waiting for the right opportunity to take advantage to fullfill its ambitions.

Agreed with all the above comments. However, the appointment has nothing to with Hun Manet's qualifications and education. It has to do with preparing Hun Manet to succeed Hun Sen. He will still receive influence and instructions from his father, but anyone, including Hun Manet, is better than Hun Sen.

Like I have said early I like the word dynasty. I, the prime minister prepare my son to take power when I can not walk or stroke or paralytic or even my death. Dr Hun Aneth have a skill economy he can fatten his troop.

10:06 AM,
I like your analysis. Your thinking is along the line of mine. You are so correct regarding the next succession. Obviously, the one who can unite Cambodian people will be one that can lead our country into a more western idealistic democracy.

You are also made an excellent point by saying that Hun Manet needs to distance himself from Hanoi. That is the absolute 100% a must if and when he takes over Cambodia. Hanoi is nothing but impeding Cambodian economic progress.

A well-versed written analysis. Good job!!
