Cambodian border chief Var Kimhong has met with Thailand's border chief Atsada Chainom for one hour this morning at the headquarter of the Council of Ministers to discuss about restarting the border negotiations and border demarcations which have been stalled due to border disputes between the two countries in the last two years.

Mr. Var Kimhong told reporters that the discussion centred on sending border technical experts to search for border post No. 1 and border post No. 25 in Choam Sa-Ngam disrict in Preah Vihear province. He said that the Thai side told him that this kind of border work does not require the approval of the Thai parliament like other border agreements.

He also said that a visit of the chairman of the Thai Border Committee to Cambodia is a positive step to rekindle the border negotiation. "I think that the visit of the new Thai Border Committee chairman is a positive step to reconnect (the border relations)", he said.

At the same time, Mr. Atsada Chainom said that the Thai parliament is still debating the three minutes of the previous meetings with Cambodia. He said in the next 30 days, the minutes will be sent to be approved by the Constitutional Council.

The two countries have planted 73 border posts along the more than 300 kilometres long borders between the two countries after the 1907 treaty. Technical border experts of the two countries have begun their searches for those border posts for more than 10 years. Currently, 48 border posts had been found, but only 33 had been surveyed and agreed upon. The other 15 border posts found had not been surveyed and agreed upon yet, while the other 25 border posts have not been found yet and the search for them will start soon.

Border strips along Vietnamese frontier should transform into concession lands and award to Chinese or Thai companies only. Likewise strips along Thai frontier should award to the Vietnamese and perhaps Myanmar. All contracts should only have 55 years limit cap but negotiable for renewal. It is awkward but Khmer land will last longer that way. Any objections from legal team ?!

I say the border strips along Vietnamese frontier should transform into concession land and award that to Cambodia farmers to grow rice for export. Likewise, strips along Thai frontier should award to Cambodia or perhaps Cambodia only. There shouldn't be contracts or limit cap or negotiation. It is favorable to Khmer, this way Khmer land will last longer. There shouldn't be any objection to that, after all it was Khmer land, Thailand robbed it from Cambodia.

My idea was to crate a buffer zone for your people
against new encroachment from (especially) the Vietnamese.
Do not preoccupy only with the Thai border where there already has been natural barrier marks like mountain ranges and creeks, rivers etc as well as legal signatures . The open spaces in the East where you and your gov are not willing to admit isn't it in the state of lost right now ?.If you prefer Cambodians to own Khmer land your gov should act differently. But then it could not last any longer without the backing isn't it.
