Norodom Ranariddh Party regrets Funcinpec's refusal for a merger

By Khmerization

The Norodom Ranariddh Party has issued a statement saying it regrets Funcinpec's rejection of its proposal to change the Funcinpec Party to Funcinpec 81 and its olive branch for future talks for the merger of the two royalist parties.

The statement said the reason it proposed to change the party name to Funcinpec 81 was because it was the birth date of the party which was formed on 21st March 1981 by the then Prince Norodom Sihanouk.

The statement also said that Prince Norodom Ranariddh was a signatory to the 1991 Paris Peace Accords, saying that Funcinpec President Keo Put Rasmy and Funcinpec's Secretary General Nhiek Bunchhay was not a party to that peace accords, therefore he is the rightful owner of the Funcinpec Party. The statement quoted Sihanouk's letter which he wrote on 16th October 2006, two days before Prince Ranariddh was deposed as Funcinpec president, that he gave the Funcinpec Party exclusively to Prince Ranariddh. "I have given Funcinpec exclusively to Samdech Krom Preah Norodom Ranariddh for a long, long time. In regard to the Funcinpec Party, Samdech Krom Preah Norodom Ranariddh can do whatever with it as he wishes", wrote ex-King Sihanouk.

The statement also quoted ex-King Sihanouk's note written on 6th November 2006, 18 days after Prince Ranariddh was deposed as Funcinpec president. "I have given Funcinpec Party exclusively to my son Norodom Ranariddh since 1991...", said Sihanouk's note.
