Nearly 200,000 officials required to declare assets next month in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, December 9 (Xinhua) -- About 200,000 Cambodian officials will be required to declare their personal assets next month, said the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), Om Yintieng (pictured) on Thursday.

"From January 1 to 31, 2011, they have to declare their assets to ACU," he said Thursday during the anti-corruption law dissemination seminar, which attended by 1,400 senior officials in Cambodia.

This will be the first asset declaration by state officials in Cambodia, he said, adding that in the first declaration form, the officials do not need to disclose the sources of money they get it from.

"The first asset declaration next month will be good for you all because it will be legalized your assets," he said, adding that the declaration will be done every two years, so in another next two years, they will need to reveal the sources of money they get from.

"Your document of asset declaration will be considered as the most confidential ones," he added.

He said the officials required to declare their assets are members of the senate, the national assembly, the government and the anti-corruption council.

Also the civil servant officials, military, police, whose positions are appointed by royal decrees or sub-decrees, and judges, prosecutors, attorneys and clerks.

And assets needed to be declared are land, buildings, houses, vehicles, machineries, jewelries, watches, business activities and they have option to declare their cash or not, said Om Yintieng.

Under the anti-corruption law promulgated in April, 2010, any official found guilty of taking bribes faces up to 15 years in prison.

Meanwhile, the government of Cambodia issued a sub-decree to determine December 9 as the national anti-corruption day.
