Mr. Cheam Yeap (pictured), chairman of the Parliamentary Commission on Finance and Audit, has rejected the opposition Sam Rainsy Party's request for the parliament to create a "special committee" to investigate the Koh Pich stampede on 22nd November which killed 351 and wounded 329 people.

He said the parliament does not need to create an investigation committee because the government has just completed its investigation. The government completed its investigation in just two days after the stampede and announced the findings a week later. Critics and civil society claimed that the investigation has been hastily closed, leading to allegations of a cover up.

The government's investigation concluded that the stampede was caused by a swaying bridge which caused people to panic and led to the stampede. However, there are eyewitness accounts and claims that gang fighting and electrocution were the main cause of the panic which led to the stampede.

On 29th November, Prime Minister Hun Sen publicly announced that the stampede was caused by the 'carelessness and negligence' of the government and that it is a 'joint mistake' and 'joint responsibility' of the government. However, he said no one will be punished or sacked for the tragedy.
