The opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) has on Tuesday has called for the creation of a "special committee" to investigate the Koh Pich Bridge stampede which killed 351 people and wounded 329 others.
In a letter to the National Assembly President Heng Samrin, signed by four SRP MPs, the SRP requested the National Assembly president to create this special committee in order to find the causes of the stampede. The letter also asked the "special committee" to identify officials who are directly responsible for the organisation and management of the festival or who have failed to prevent the stampede and punish them accordingly.
The letter also ask the "special committee" to investigate the role played by the owner(s) of the Koh Pich Island or their failures to put in place sufficient measures to prevent the stampede.
According to some sources, the Koh Pich Island Development site is owned by Prime Minister Hun Sen's wife and children and Canadia Bank, which Mr. Hun Sen's family is the majority shareholder.
The government had set up an investigation committee one day after the stampede and the next day it concluded that the stampede was caused by a swaying bridge. Exactly one week later, on Monday 29th November, the findings of the investigation was publicly announced by Prime Minister Hun Sen. He concluded that the stampede and the deaths of 351 people were caused by the 'carelessness' of the government and therefore was the 'joint mistake' and 'joint responsibility' of the government. However, he said no one will be sacked or punished over the tragedy.
