However, there are eyewitness accounts of what triggered the panic and the stampede.
Deum Ampil has reported that one female vendor has telephoned them to report about an eyewitness account of the cause of the stampede. She said a male colleague, who witnessed the cause of the stampede first-hand, was scared to come out and tell the authority because he was angry and worried about his security. She said the man told her that the panic and stampede was caused by a group of 6 drunken gangsters who go around abusing and touching young women. He saw many of them touching women which caused a fight. Because of the fight/brawl and because young women are afraid of the gangsters touching them, they tried to escape, running in the same direction to toward the bridge, causing a stampede.
The eyewitness blamed the security guards at Koh Pich for not taking actions against the gangsters when he reported about their mischievous activities to them.
One witness said it was triggered by electrocution, where up to 30 people got electrocuted to death which lead to the panic and stampede. Other witnesses has confirmed that electric shocks had caused some of the 456 deaths.
