A number of Khmer Krom leaders living in Cambodia have met on Friday to discuss about writing a petition to UN chief Ban Ki-moon regarding human rights abuses against Khmer Krom living in Vietnam during his 3-day visit to Cambodia from 26-28 October.
Leaders of 10 Khmer Krom associations in Cambodia have met on Friday 15th at Maha Montrei Pagoda in Phnom Penh where they have drafted a petition to send to Mr. Ban Ki-moon. On 12th October, they have sent a letter to the office of UNDP in Phnom Penh seeking a meeting with Mr. Ban Ki-moon, but they have yet to receive a reply. They plan to personally hand the petition to Mr. Ban and if the request for the meeting is rejected, they plan to send the petition to him through the office of UNDP.
Mr. Yont Tharo (pictured), president of Khmer Kampuchea Krom Cultural Centre and an MP from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party, said at present Khmer Krom families living in Vietnam had been persecuted and abused by the Vietnamese authority. "Like the recent incident, some Khmer Krom were killed by ethnic Vietnamese people and they have not resolved that matter and find justice for those Khmer Krom families yet", he said.
President of Khmer Krom Friendship Association, Mr. Thach Sang, said nowadays Khmer Krom people have been oppressed by the Vietnamese authority and they are prepared to exhaust all avenues in order to see the UN chief. "We must do everything to meet with the UN Secretary General or we must send a petition that show our goodwill and sincerity", he said.
During the visit, Mr. Ban will have an audience with King Sihamoni, meet with Prime Minister Hun Sen and visit the Khmer Rouge Tribunal and the Cambodia-Soviet Friendship Hospital.
