Mr. Kong Korm (pictured), deputy president of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), has on Friday 10th September sent a letter to Mr. Chea Sim, President of the ruling Cambodian People's Party and President of the Senate, asking him to find a political compromise on Mr. Sam Rainsy's document forgery and disinformation court case and other border case.
Mr. Kong Korm said the request letter to Mr. Chea Sim had been approved by Mr. Sam Rainsy who had been living in exile in Paris since the end of 2009. He said the letter had requested Mr. Chea Sim to help facilitate a political compromise with National Assembly President Heng Samrin and Prime Minister Hun Sen to ask them to withdraw the lawsuit against Mr. Sam Rainsy and to re-instate his parliamentary immunity.
Mr. Cheam Yeap, a senior MP from the ruling CPP and chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Finance and Audits, said a political compromise can only be done after the court had convicted Mr. Sam Rainsy. After the conviction, Prime Minister Hun Sen can then submit a request letter of pardon to the king for his approval in accordance with article 27 of the constitution.
On 27th January, Mr. Sam Rainsy had been convicted by the Svay Rieng Provincial Court and sentenced to 2 years jail for destruction of public property for his role in the uprooting of the Cambodian-Vietnamese border post on 25th October 2009. On Wednesday 9th, the court had held a session on his second case on charges of document forgery and disinformation when he published a series of maps and documents purported to show Vietnamese encroachments of the Cambodian borders. The verdict is expected to be announced on the 23rd of September. If convicted, Mr. Sam Rainsy could be jailed for 15-18 years jail.
