23 year-old Pheng Sovan Vicheth (pictured), a Cambodian student studying information technology at a Cambodian university has come first in a world competition to design computer network organised by Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE).
Pheng Sovan Vicheth beat other 8 contenders from China, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines in a competition held in China. The CISCO's certificate is internationally-recognised and is the best certificate in networking.
Pheng Sovan Vicheth said he had studied for 5 years for this CCIE certificate. He said the competition was held in two stages. The first stage is a 3-hour written examination held at Sunrise Information Technology headquarter in China and was supervised by representatives from Pearson VUE. The second stage is an 8-hour practical examination to design a networking system between Hong Kong, China, Australia and America.
Mr. Hong Sophanny, a representative of CISCO Networking Academy in Cambodia, said this is the first time a Cambodian software engineer won the CCIE certificate, where competition is very tough. "In total around the world we (Cisco) have only about 20,000 (software) engineers who hold this certificate", he said. He said to be able to attain CCIE certificate, candidates must spend quite a long time to study the course and spend at least $5,000 for the course.
Mr. Seng Hourt, administrator of Sunrise Information Technology Centre in Cambodia, said Pheng Sovan Vicheth's win means the boost in human resource for his centre in the continuation of training and development in the field of information technology.
