Cambodian military sources said the Thai military had withdrawn its troops from the Preah Vihear border areas after strongly warned by Cambodian commanders that the provocative reinforcements of troops by Thailand could lead to armed clashes, reports Deum Ampil.

Gen. Chea Dara (pictured), commander of the Preah Vihear Command, told Deum Ampil on Tuesday that the Thai military had withdrawn 40 truckloads of troops from the border areas and redeployed them about 5-6 kilometres deep inside Thai territory. Radio Free Asia on Tuesday quoted Gen. Chea Dara as threatening to launch an attack on both Thai troops and the Thai yellow shirt protesters if they crossed into Cambodian territory. "We are sending messages to the Thai leaders that what was their purpose of sending troops to the border areas? To create troubles or to rob Cambodian territories? And we warn the extremist Thai yellow shirt protesters that you can do whatever you want inside your territory. I am reiterating again that don't do like what had happened on 15th July 2008 when they created a scenario by using a Buddhist monk and a nun plus soldiers to come and robbed Cambodian territory. I am warning that this hour, this time, you must withdraw immediately to avoid troubles because at this hour, the Cambodian military had sufficient capacity, enough capability. Any encroachments on Cambodian territory, even one milimetre, will be met with a swift response", he said.

Gen. Chea Dara claimed that on 29th July, the Thai side had sent 35 truckloads of troops to Phnom Trop areas and Ta Sem Pass, which was located about 5 kilometres west of Preah Vihear. He said in the afternoon of the same day, another 8 truckloads of Thai troops were sent to the nearby Ta Thav Pass. And on Saturday, 31st of July, 25 truckloads of blue beret reservists, equivalent to 750 soldiers, were sent to the areas from Lopburi.

On Saturday, there was a meeting between Cambodia's commander of Preah Vihear, Gen. Srey Doek and Thai commander Gen. Suwanchai at Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak to ease the tension. The Cambodian side asked why the Thai side reinforced too many troops to the areas of which the Thai commander answered that they were sent there to prevent the Thai yellow shirt protesters from crossing into Cambodian territory.

The report said that after strong warnings from Gen. Chea Dara, the Thai side had withdrawn their troops from the areas on Tuesday, 3rd August.
