A top Cambodian commander has called a Thai senator, Sen. Phaiboon Nititawan, a war criminal after the senator allegedly called on Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to shell and bomb the Thai-claimed 4.6 square kilometres area around Preah Vihear temple to evict Cambodian troops and civilians from the area, reports Kampuchea Thmey.
The senator was reportedly to have given the Thai prime minister 10 to 15 days dateline to carry out the artillery shelling of the 4.6 square kilometres area.
Gen. Chea Dara, Cambodian Deputy Commander-in-Chief in charge of the Preah Vihear Operations, said he was dismayed that a lawmaker such as Phaiboon Nititawan should be calling for his government to commit war crimes against Cambodian civilians. He said if Thai troops wanted to attack the area they would have to bring coffins with them.
Under the 1904 convention, 1907 treaty and 1908 map signed by France and Siam, Preah Vihear temple and the 4.6 square kilometres claimed by the current Thai government are located inside Cambodian territory. The International Court of Justice in 1962 had also ruled that the temple and the area situated under the sovereignty of Cambodia.
