There is confusion as to which country, Thailand or Cambodia, that requested for the indefinite postponement of the annual General Border Meeting between the two countries, with Thailand pointing the finger at Cambodia and Cambodia pointing the finger at Thailand, reports Deum Ampil.
On Wednesday, Bangkok Post quoted Thai defence spokesman Col Thanathip Sawangsaeng as saying that Cambodia had asked for the postponement. "Cambodia has asked Thailand to postpone indefinitely the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting scheduled for Aug 27-28 in Bangkok", reported Bangkok Post.
However, Gen. Chhum Socheat (pictured), spokesman for the Cambodian Defence Ministry, said it was the Thai side who requested for the indefinite postponement of the meeting. "In fact it was the Thai side who requested for the postponement when they made telephone calls to the Cambodian Defence Ministry on 7th August without telling us the real reason for the postponement", he told Deum Ampil. The Thai MCOT News, however, reported that the postponement was mutually agreed.
Gen. Chhum Socheat said Cambodia has prepared all the documents ready for the meeting and even booked the air tickets to Bangkok.
The General Border Meeting is an annual meeting between the two countries that focuses on border security, border trades, cross-border drug trafficking, human trafficking and maritime security.
Bangkok Post reported that the postponement might be related to the current military tensions between the two countries. However, both sides denied that the postponement had anything to do with the current border tensions.
