The ancient Surin palm leaf class

Below are exchanges between Khmer language scholars in Surin who are trying to preserve the Khmer language and ancient palm leave scripts undertaken by Sleuk Rith Preservation Project in Surin.

Dear Khun Cheymongkol,

I did not see you in the 4th conference on Indigenous Day organized in Chiang Mai. Several representatives of indigenous groups in Thailand attended this conference and exchanged their view regarding indigenous rights, identity, etc. The term "Indigenous" here is broadly defined as ethnic minorities or nationalities. One of the issues raised in this conference is the importance of the mother language which should be emphasized. I think the project which you are doing is also about this. Recommendations from the conference will be submitted to the Reform Committee headed by Dr. Prawes Wasi.

It is a good idea to link with those NGOs working on this issue.

The palm leaf manuscript project is an excellent idea and it is good that you have many young people interested in reading and transliterating the text. I hope to see some day a list of topics or stories which are found in these palm
leaves.
