An Auckland Grammar School student who fabricated hundreds of fake IDs for school students made an estimated $12,000 from his enterprise.
Auckland Grammar School student student Marcus Lim, 17, was charged with forgery after five students were found with fake driver licences in November 2009.
A police investigation found he had sold at least 150 licenses for between $80 and $100 to hundreds of students from 15 Auckland schools.
Crown prosecutor Rebecca Savage said police had estimated the Cambodian teenager had made about $12,000.
Judge Lawrence Hinton sentenced him in the North Shore District Court this afternoon to 400 hours of community work.
Defence counsel William Spring said Lim was a refugee who had been abandoned financially by his family.
He had used the money for education and living expenses.
"The only victim who is going to come out of this is the defendant," Spring said.
