The opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) has on Friday 9th July called a press conference after there are reports that 4 of its activists in Kampong Thom were involved in terrorism, after they they were summoned to appear before the Kampong Thom Provincial Court on Tuesday, 6th of July.
Four SRP activists have also been summoned to Kampong Thom Court before on 22nd June to answer terrorism charges that were allegedly committed in 2004. In 2004, villagers in Kroya commune were allegedly terrorised by a group of "paper tigers"- a group of thieves who went around people's houses, terrorised, beaten and jabbed them with syringes.
At that time, Mr. Kim Hong, SRP chief for North Kroya commune, Ouk Thorn, SRP chief councillor for Prasat Balang district, Kruy Koeun, chief of SRP for North Kroya village and Choam Cheav, president of SRP for North Kroya village wrote a report to the Kampong Thom authority to ask them to put measures and take actions to against the perpetrators. However, instead of investigating and taking actions against the real perpetrators, the Kampong Thom authority accused them of committing the crimes, a charge they vehemently denied.
During a press conference today, 3 of the accused, with the exception of Choam Cheav who was absent, denied all charges against them and said that the allegations against them were baseless that were politically concocted against them because they were popular members of the opposition parties.
