The Cambodia Ministry of Foreign Affairs blasted the UN Representative of the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights in Cambodia, after he was quoted by the Cambodia Daily of making critical comments of the government's recent extradition of two alleged Thai bombers without due legal process, according to a statement obtained by Khmerization.
In a statement signed by Foreign Minister Hor Namhong, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs accuses Mr. Christophe Peschoux, UN Representative of the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights in Cambodia, of meddling in Cambodia's internal affairs and warns that any repeats of this sort of interferences in the future could see him expelled from Cambodia.
In its 7th July's edition, the Cambodia Daily quoted Mr. Peschoux as saying that Cambodia had rushed into extraditing the two Thai suspects without going through due legal process.
The statement hit back at Mr. Peschoux, saying the extradition of terrorism suspects is the "exclusive rights" of the sovereignty of Cambodia without the need for any recommentdations from any sources. The statement reminds Mr. Peschoux that the Cambodian government has clearly separated the issue of political suppression and terrorism before invoking the extradition treaty.
It warns Mr. Peschoux to restrict his comments to his sphere of responsibility as set out in the MoU signed between the UN and the Cambodian government on 1st of January 2010. "In your capacity as the UN Representative of the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights in Cambodia, your mission consists of realising the activities of technical co-operation as inscribed in the MoU of the 1st January 2010. Therefore, I wish to request you to fulfill your mission only under the framework of the MoU and cease to interfere in the affairs relating the to the sovereignty of Cambodia", said the statement.
It further warns that, if Mr. Peschoux's interferences still persist, he would be kicked out of Cambodia. "Any such future activities (of yours) will lead the Cambodian government to determine the opportunity of your presence in Cambodia", added the statement.
At the time of this article going to press, Mr. Peschoux cannot be reached for comments in regard to the reaction from the Cambodian Foreign Ministry.
