Four activists from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) in Kampong Thom province are facing terrorism charges, but the court has asked them to pay the money to settle the case and for the charges to be dropped, reports Kampuchea Thmey.
The 4 accused were Mr. Kim Hong, SRP chief for North Kroya commune, Ouk Thorn, SRP chief councillor for Prasat Balang district, Kruy Koeun, chief of SRP for North Kroya village and Chorm Cheav, president of SRP for North Kroya village.
According to sources from the SRP, the 4 activists were summoned to be appear before the court on 6th July, but they have not been detained.
Mr. Men Sothavarin, SRP MP from Kampong Thom, told Kampuchea Thmey by telephone on Wednesday afternoon, 7th of July, that the 4 activists were facing charges of being members of the "Paper Tigers" group which went on terrorising people in 2004. In 2004, there were rumours that a group of "Paper Tigers" went around people's houses at night and jabbed them with sharp sticks.
Mr. Ouk Thorn told Kampuchea Thmey by telephone on Wednesday 7th July that on 6th of July, Kampong Thom Provincial Court summoned Kim Hong and Kruy Koeun to appear before the court and he had accompanied them to the court. He said after Kim Hong and Kruy Koeun came out of the question (court) room, they said the court gave them two choices - a detention or to pay the money to the court.
According to Cambodian Express News, Mr. Men Sothavarin said the 4 were accused of being terrorists simply because they are very popular with voters in their area. He said the 4 will not flee their homes because they are innocent of the charges.
At the time of this article going to press, it is not clear what option the accused have chosen.
