Cambodian villagers said many groups of Vietnamese loggers have secretly sneaked in to illegally log in Cambodian forests in Rattanakiri province, reports Radio Free Asia.

Ethnic Jarai villagers in Nhang commune of Andong Meas in Rattanakiri said on Monday that many groups of Vietnamese loggers, equipped with machinery, have crossed the borders to log inside Cambodian territory and destroyed large area of forests in the province.

Villagers from the nearby Setaing village said they have seen these Vietnamese illegal loggers operating in the area with the involvements of the Cambodian police since early 2010. A Setaing villagers said last week, 10 villagers walk around an area situated about 5 kilometres from the borderline and saw groups of Vietnamese actively logging in the area. When they saw the villagers, those Vietnamese just dropped their equipments and escaped back to Vietnam. "All the machinery have been confiscated, the machinery that have been used to cut Tnuong trees (kind of high-grade timber). They came in great numbers, between 8 to 9 groups. They came to cut trees by getting protection from (Cambodian) police and soldiers", said a villager who wants to remain anonymous.

Villagers said there are about 7-10 people in one group, coming with electric-powered saws, home-made push-carts as well as buffalo-carts and ox-carts. They said all the cut timbers are then transported back to Vietnam.

Police and soldiers in the area cannot be reached for comments. However, Mr. Norng Darith, governor of Andong Meas district, said he has not received the reports about the illegal logging by the Vietnamese yet. He said, however, that he will order the investigation into the allegations by the villagers.

In early 2010, a number of commune councillors from Nhang commune in Andong Meas district have detained a number of military-owned and police-owned trucks transporting timbers to Vietnam, but they let the trucks through the border when they were threatened with weapons by soldiers and police protecting the transport trucks.

Vietnamese illegal logging and mining inside Cambodian territory have become prevalent in recent times. On Friday 9th July, Cambodian police and military police swooped in on an illegal gold mine in Badol village in Sesan commune of O'Yadao district in Rattanakiri province and arrested 6 Vietnamese illegal miners. They were later deported to Vietnam without charge and punishment.

We have too many scumbags in our police and military forces, the gov't need to periodically screen people scumbags and seriously punish them, these people supposedly the heart and soul in our society, they are our civil servants, instead our gov't still allow these thugs and scumbags to sabotage national properties, to every despicable things causing serious chaos in our society time and time again, they must be caught and severely punish. Our gov't should required all public officials at all level to be literate (acquire some education) before allowing to serve public. Our gov't should swift action against all foreigners whose disregard our laws, our people, and illegal come in our country, stealing, and sabotaging our properties. These are the obligations for you, the government to resolve and taking care and make sure they will not happen again in the future.

I suspected all along that it was our police and military police who were conniving with the Vietnamese to allow them to log inside our Cambodian territory. These scumbags and traitorous police and military must be sacked and punished. I suspected that local civilian authority were also involved. There must be a punishment. If no punishment, they will keep doing it- conspired with the Viets to steal Cambodian natural resources and destroy our environment again and again.
