Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who had just re-activated his defamation lawsuit against Mr. Bun Tha (pictured), the editor of Khmer Amatak newspaper, told RFA on Saturday that he will not withdraw his lawsuit despite Mr. Bun Tha agreeing to publish a correction, reports Radio Free Asia.
Dr. Kao Kim Hourn sued Mr. Bun Tha in late 2009 when the latter published an article alleging that Dr. Kao Kim Hourn had overcharged prospective students applying for scholarships provided for free by the Japanese government. Last week, he had re-activated his lawsuit and refused to withdraw it despite Mr. Bun Tha offering to publish an apology and a correction. "I leave this case to the court to decide. I asked him to resolve the issue a long time ago, but he refused to resolve it. I begged him (to resolve it) for a long time already, but he refused to publish a correction. I begged him many, many times already, but he refused to correct the article. Now, I have no other choice, except through a legal channel", he said.
Mr. Bun Tha said he will fight the case in court and will not flee the country. "We both have our own lawyers. (Khmer Amatak) based our source from the direct information provided by students (who applied for the scholarships) and according to telephone interviews with them and we also based our evidence on one more source and that is a photocopy shop", he said.
