More than a thousand military personnel from 23 countries are in Cambodia for the annual global peacekeeper training exercise. It's called "Angkor Sentinel" and is jointly run by the US Department of Defence and State Department. But the New York-based organisation Human Rights Watch has criticised the military training exercise, saying the US should not be working with Cambodian military units, that Human Rights Watch says have committed abuses.

The multi-national military exercise co-sponsored by the Cambodian government and the U.S Military Command in the Pacific in under way in Cambodia, with the initial stage commence with ceremony this morning, the 12th of July, at the Phnom Penh Hotel under the auspicice of U.S Ambassador Carol Rodley and Cambodian Secretary of State of Defence Ministry, Gen. Moeung Samphan.
The other participating countries, the majority of which are the members of the United Nations include France, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, India, Italy, Germany, Japan, Mongolia and the United Kingdom among others.
According to the plan, Gen. Chhum Socheat, spokesman for the Cambodian Defence Ministry, said the military exercise, which is part of the Global Peace Operations Initiatives (GPOI) and a UN-US peacekeeping-training program, will be conducted in two separate forms. The first stage will be conducted in Phnom Penh at the Inter-Continental Hotel as part of the far command from headquarters.
The second stage will be a field exercise which will take place in Kompong Speu province, about 50 kilometers from Phnom Penh.
According to Gen. Chhum Socheat, most of the U.S military personnel involved in this military exercise are from the U.S Pacific Command based in Honolulu in Hawaii.
