Prof. Surya Subedi, the UN human rights envoy to Cambodia, has been criticised for being too soft on the issue of human rights abuses in Cambodia during his 10 day visit to Cambodia from 8-18 June, reports Deum Ampil.

Prof. Subedi is on a 10 day visit to Cambodia to assess and evaluate human rights situations and the Cambodian justice system where he will meet with government officials and King Sihamoni.

However, Deum Ampil reported that earlier this week a local human rights group Adhoc has issued a statement criticising Prof. Subedi for not raising the issue of land grabbing and evictions during his meeting with a group of local NGOs.

A scheduled meeting with the opposition parties have either not been scheduled or been cancelled. Mr. Yem Ponharith, an MP and Secretary General of Human Rights Party (HRP), said a scheduled meeting between HRP officials and Prof. Subedi at 2pm on Friday the 11th of June has been canncelled and he does not know when it will be rescheduled. Mr. Son Chhay, a senior MP from the largest opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) has said that his party has been actively seeking a meeting with Prof. Subedi, but has not been able to secure an appointment yet. However, he is confident that the UN Envoy will meet with all the opposition parties like he had done in his previous visits. "This time, Prof. Subedi will meet with us like any other time when we have always had a meeting with him", he said.

There are reports that a planned visit by Prof. Subedi to a prison was also cancelled without clear explanation. However, some government officials said that Prof. Subedi has a very busy and hectic schedule with government leaders and officials.
