Prince Thomico criticises the SRP for requesting King-Father Sihanouk to raise border issues with Vietnam

Prince Sisowath Thomico (pictured), advisor to ex-King Sihanouk, has criticised the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) for requesting that ex-King Sihanouk raise the border issues with the Vietnamese leaders during his upcoming visit to Vietnam later this month, reports Cambodian Express News.

Ex-King Sihanouk has been officially invited by the Vietnamese president, Mr. Nguyen Minh Triet, to pay a 4-day visit Vietnam at the end of this month.

In late may, after hearing about ex-King Sihanouk's visit to Vietnam, 21 MPs from the SRP wrote a letter asking him to take the opportunity to raise border issues with the Vietnamese leaders.

Prince Thomico said the ex-King has retired from public life since 2004 and therefore he cannot meddle in the affairs of the state. "Border problem is a technical issue, therefore it is a government's job. The government has done everything in accordance with the laws", he said.

The prince said that the SRP's request is equivalent to saying that it does not need a monarchy. In the past, ex-King Sihanouk has always run into troubles with Prime Minister Hun Sen whenever he mentioned about Cambodia's border issues with Vietnam. In 2005, Prime Minister Hun Sen threatened to abolish the monarchy after King Sihamoni and ex-King Sihanouk gave hints that they might not agree to sign to ratify the 2985 Supplemental Treaty with Vietnam after widespread accusations that the treaty caused the Cambodia to lose large chunk of territory to Vietnam.

Prince Thomico added that the SRP should read the constitution first before trying to involve the current king or the ex-king in the affairs of the state. "I am so curious as to why the SRP didn't read the constitution first before they requested the King-Father to talk about border issues. The SRP has requested the King-Father to talk about border issues when he cannot meddle in the affairs of the executive branch. The letter can make the people misunderstand that King-Father doesn't care about the border issues", he added.

Mr. Yim Sovan, spokesman for the SRP, said the SRP's letter to King-Father Sihanouk is the last resort after it's attempt to raise the issues with the government did not yield any result. "Every Khmer has the duty to protect their territory. It is true that the ex-king did not have any powers, but he has abundance of experiences and talents in the defend of our territory. We just hope that he has some thoughts to provide solutions and will help provide advice to the government regarding border works", he said.

Come on, prince Thomico!

King Father Norodom Sihanouk is a citizen of the Kingdom of Cambodia and for that reason, not only that he can certainly raise the border issues with Vietnam as a private citizen of Cambodia, but also he has the obligation to do so to defend Cambodia's territorial integrity; after all, being a former leader of Cambodia, he does know where the borderline should be.

Cambodian monarchy is quite meaningless if it continues to be silent on the issue affecting the country's territorial integrity.

Why are you afraid of the abolition of the monarchy in Cambodia?

If it dies to defend Cambodia's territorial integrity, it dies in honor with duty fulfilled; otherwise it will die in vain as time will prove it.

A man who cannot walk, eat and talk, though still alive lives a meaningless life.

The last opportunity should not be missed if Cambodian monarchy is to exist with meaningful purposes!

You're right, Anet Khmer!
I have question about the one article Article 8) of the Cambodia Constitutin, could you help me understand it? Here I copy the whole article"Article 8:
The King of Cambodia shall be a symbol of unity and eternity of the nation.
The King shall be guarantor of the national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Cambodia the protector of rights and freedom for all citizens and the guarantor of international treaties."

Thanks,
a Khmer citizen

A Khmer Citizen,

According to the Cambodian Constitution, the King of Cambodia must make sure by all means that no country can violate His country's territorial integrity.

He is empowered by the Constitution to act to protect the country's territorial integrity, but King Sihamoni has chosen not to exercise that prerogative. In my opinion, the King has made the greatest mistake by remaining silent on the issue.
