The Phnom Penh City Hall has permitted Khmer Krom associations to hold commemoration services of the loss of Kampuchea Krom territory at the compound of Samakki Raingsey pagoda in Meanchey district, reports everyday.com.

A number of Khmer Krom associations have sought permission to hold the commemoration servcises at the Olympic Stadium or a park near Botum Pagoda, a much bigger place, but their requests were turned down.

Mr. Thach Setha (pictured), president of the Kampuchea Krom Association, said he is disappointed that the authority has just given the permission at such a short notice, despite permission was sought more than one month ago. "The delay by the authority in giving us permission has caused us to lose a lot of time to organise the services", he said.

Kampuchea Krom was a former Cambodian territory. On 4th June 1949, the French parliament, which was the coloniser of Cambodia and Vietnam, voted to cede 21 provinces of Kampuchea Krom territory to Vietnam, despite strong protests from the Cambodian government.

All Khmers should commemorate 4th June as a National Day of Mourning. 21 provinces of Kampuchea Krom is a large chunk of territory. Cambodia would be an important country in the region if we didn't lose 21 provinces to Vietnam and around equal of that land mass to Thailand.
