Cambodian Ambassador to Thailand has sent a diplomatic note to the Thai government alleging that Thai police has tortured Petch Saengmanee, a Cambodian arson suspect, to force him to confess to the burning of buildings in Bangkok in the aftermath of the Thai crackdown on red shirt protesters on 19th May, reports Koh Santepheap.

In a diplomatic note sent on 1st June, the Ambassador said that the action of the Thai police constitutes gross human right violations that violate international laws.

The diplomatic note added that during a consular visit, Petch Saengmanee, also known as San Mony Phet, told consular officials that he was punched in the face, smacked on the lips and kicked in the chest by the Thai police to extract confessions from him. The note also stated that the Cambodian Embassy believes that Petch Saengmanee was just an innocent bystander wrongly arrested. It asks the Thai authority to re-examine the allegation against Petch Saengmanee so that justice and freedom can be rendered to him expeditiously.

Petch Saengmanee was arrested on 19th May at his workplace near the protest site. He denied that he was involved in the burning of any buildings in Bangkok, claiming that he was just curious about the burning and came out of his workplace to watch the burning buildings when he was arrested.
