Many people from Boeung Chhouk slum community have sent a letter to Prime Minister Hun Sen through Prof. Surya Subedi (pictured), the UN Special Envoy on Human Rights in Cambodia, asking him to intervene in their land disputes with local authority, reports Radio Free Asia.

Prof. Subedi is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Hun Sen as part of his 10-day third visit to Cambodia to evaluate the human rights situations and justice system in Cambodia.

Mr. Sea Phearum, chairman of a local NGO, said that Mr. Kleang Hourt, governor of Reussey Keo district and Mrs. Touch Sarom, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh, have sent letters to residents of Boeung Chhouk III slum community asking them to dismantle their houses and move out of the areas. He said residents have staged many protests against the evictions but the authority has ignored their pleas and now they decided to bring their case to Prime Minister Hun Sen through the UN envoy.

On 9th, local human right group Adhoc has issued a statement asking the UN envoy to raise land issues and land evictions with the Cambodian authority during his meetings with the Cambodian leaders.

Mr. Subedi has come under strong criticism from the Cambodian civil society for his lack of enthusiasm in the issues of land disputes and land evictions in Cambodia.
