A shipment of 257 Chinese military vehicles pledged last month have arrived at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port and have been unloaded today, reports Deum Ampil.
Chinese President Hu Jintao offered Cambodia the military vehicles along with 50,000 military uniforms during a meeting with Prime Minister Hun Sen in Shanghai in May, a month after the United States cancelled a similar shipment following the controversial deportation of 20 ethnic Uighur asylum seekers to China in December.
Gen. Chhum Socheat, spokesman for the Cambodian Ministry of Defence, said the shipment has arrived in Sihanoukville on 16th June, but it was just unloaded today. He added that from 19-21 June, 9 Chinese mechanical experts will train Cambodian military personnel on how to drive the vehicles as well as some technical aspects of the vehicles.
On 21st of June, those vehicles will be driven to Phnom Penh Military Airport for an official handover in a ceremony chaired by Gen. Moeung Samphan, Secretary of State of Defence Ministry, and Mr. Ji Wan Jun, Chief of Material Directorate of China. At 3:30 pm the same day, both sides will officially sign documents of transfer under the auspicices of Defence Minister Tea Banh and Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The 257 vehicles comprised of 200 military lorries, 20 ambulances, 30 vehicles for military commanders, 5 mobile repair vehicles and 2 tank-carriers plus 50,000 military uniforms to the value of 100 million yuans, which is equivalent to $15 million.
