An MP from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) has written a letter to King-Father Sihanouk (pictured) urging him to pay a visit to the Khmer Krom people in southern Vietnam while he is on official visit to Vietnam in June, reports Cambodian Express News.
Mr. Yont Tharo, SRP MP from Banteay Meanchey province, said in a letter that he hopes Sihanouk's visit to the Khmer Krom people in southern Vietnam will help put pressures on the Vietnamese government to ease restrictions on freedom of expression and freedom of religion of the Khmer Krom people. "I, the Buddhist monks as well as all the Khmer people, have strong hope that Your Majesty will raise the human rights issue and freedom of expression as well as the issue of indigenous rights of the Khmer Krom people during Your Majesty's meeting with the leaders of the Vietnamese government. Furthermore, I strongly believe that Your Majesty will take this special occasion to pay a visit to the monks and the Khmer Krom people in the provinces where many Khmer Krom people live, such as Preah Tropeang (Tra Vinh), Khleang (Soc Trang), Pol Leav (Bac Lieu), Teuk Khmao (Ca Mau), Moat Chrouk (An Giang) and Kromuon Sor", the letter said.
Mr. Tith Sothea, spokesman for the Press and Quick Reaction Unit, said on 18th May that the opposition party is trying to exploit King-Father Sihanouk's visit to Vietnam for political gains. He said all Khmer Krom living in Vietnam must respect Vietnamese laws and that King-Father Sihanouk cannot interfere in Vietnam's sovereignty.
Prince Sisowath Thomico, personal advisor to King-Father Sihanouk, said on 18th May that said he doesn't know the exact date and details of Sihanouk's visit to Vietnam yet, which he said will be made clear at the beginning of June. He added that he had not received Mr. Yont Tharo's letter yet, but said that Sihanouk's unwavering love for the Khmer Krom people has not changed since he came to the throne, even in his retirement.
Sihanouk first came to the throne in 1941, but abdicated in 1955 in favour of his father, King Suramarit. When King Suramarith died in 1960, Sihanouk's mother, Queen Kossamak, acted as a throne guardian until Sihanouk was ousted from power in a coup d'etat in 1970. Sihanouk was installed as king again in 1993, but retired in 2004 in favour of his son, the current King Sihamoni.
In his early reign in the 1940s, when Cambodia and Vietnam were still under the French Protectorate, King Sihanouk had paid at least one official visit to Kampuchea Krom in which he had received a very warm welcome from the Khmer Krom people living in southern Vietnam.

Khmer Krom have been oppressed by the Vietnamese authority for centuries. Yont Tharo is right to appeal to ex-King Sihanouk to pay a visit to them. Sihanouk must also raise the issue of freedom of religion, culture, language of Khmer Krom with Vietnamese leaders.
Sihanouk have to go to visit Khmer Krom people. They are our brothers and sisters. The visit itself is not a politic. It is a humanitarian relation issue.
If he does not want to go, the monarchy in Cambodia means nothing for now and in the future. If the Hanoi do not let him to visit, it shows that Hanoi treats Sihanouk as a stupid clown just like its puppet Hun Sen.
If we have a proper Khmer nationalist government, we can claim our Kampuchea Krom back, after all those land and people was given to Viet by the French not by Khmer government 60 years ago.
Hanoi is worrying about this issue more that anything, because Khmer unification is possible, if all Khmer parties united with this issue.
Hanoi policy to counter this issue is to strengthen the CPP so that CPP can suppress all Khmer nationalists.
Hanoi inject more illegal Vietnamese civilian to settle in Cambodia, so that they will change the political landscape. Vietnamization in Cambodia is done in a fast speed and in the open way, no one dare to argue about this matter.
CPP is a pure Hanoi’s mechanism to transform Cambodia into a another Hanoi’s province.
