Chea Mony, the president of the Free Trade Union of Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia (FTUWKC), who led workers' fight against appalling working conditions and exploitation in the Cambodian textile industry, will not re-contest for the presidency of FTUWKC due to health reasons, reports Cambodian Express News.

Chea Mony decided not to re-contest the union election scheduled for 27th May, citing health problems, after succeeding his older brother Chea Vichea six years ago after the latter was gunned down in broad daylight in 2004.

He said the reason he will not re-contest the election on 27th May was due to pulmonary problems, but most importantly because he thinks FTUWKC needs a new leader and a new direction. Chea Mony said FTUWKC needs a strong and competent leader and so he endorsed Mr. Rong Chhun, president of the Cambodian Indepedent Teachers Association, has his successor.

Mr. Rong Chhun, who is a good friend of Chea Mony, said he has no plan to wrestle the FTUWKC presidency from his good friend, but said he cannot allow the FTUWKC to be leaderless after Chea Mony's resignation.
