Cambodian opposition parties have expressed concerns about the sharp increase in Vietnamese tourists to Cambodia saying that some Vietnamese could illegally come to settle in Cambodia under the guise of tourism, report Free Press Magazine Online.

There are reports that in the month of April, more than 10,000 Vietnamese tourists had come to Cambodia. The sharp increase in such a short time could be a cause for concerns, said the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP).

Mr. Yim Sovan, spokesman for the SRP, on Tuesday called on immigration officials and police to closely monitor the entry to Cambodia by Vietnamese tourists so that they don't use tourism as a disguise to come to settle in Cambodia illegally.

Mr. Yim Sovan said, currently, there are approximately 4 million Vietnamese settlers living in Cambodia, the majority are illegal immigrants, among the total Cambodia's population of 14 million. He said these Vietnamese settlers have not been given citizenships by the Cambodian king and therefore the authority should take measures to check andverify their citzenship and sent back to Vietnam if they are found to be living illegally in Cambodia.

Many Vietnamese settlers are mostly living on boathouses along the Tanle Sap River in Kampong Chhnang and Siem Reap provinces. In the past, many Vietnamese leaders, including the Vietnamese Prime Minister and President of the Vietnamese parliament, have come to distribute gifts to them on a number of occasions.
