The Chodun Ilbo
The families of fishermen who went missing when a 99-ton fishing boat sank while searching for survivors of the sunken Navy corvette Cheonan on Tuesday protested against the government's failure to help them salvage the ship and retrieve their loved ones' bodies.
Since the Kumyang 98 sank after being hit by a Cambodian cargo ship 55 km west of Daecheong Island on April 2, the government has taken hardly any action.
Some 20 relatives of missing fishermen headed by Lee Won-sang visited the Central Government Complex on Tuesday morning and demanded the government take steps to salvage the ship, arrange funerals and give the men some kind of posthumous recognition.
In principle, the government's position is to honor the victims, and Prime Minister Chung Un-chan is looking for ways to work this out, but the government is apparently reluctant to salvage the ship as it would cost W1 billion to raise. Some officials are even against honoring the fishermen as the Kumyang 98 sank not during the actual search but while returning to port afterwards.
