Sam Rainsy (pictured), leader of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), has been summoned to attend the French Appeal Court in Paris today, Thursday 25th March, to hear the appeal he lodged against the decision of the lower French court which earlier judged that he had defamed Foreign Minister Hor Namhong, reports everyday.com.

In April 2008, Mr. Sam Rainsy made a speech alleging that a certain unnamed foreign minister of Cambodia was complicit in the Khmer Rouge crimes, which Mr. Hor Namhong interpreted that Mr. Rainsy was talking about him. He sued Mr. Rainsy in the French court and won.

Mr. Sam Rainsy told the Cambodia Daily newspaper that he is confident that the Appeal Court will reverse the decision of the lower court.

Mr. Koy Kuong, spokesman for the Cambodian Foreign Ministry, said Foreign Minister Hor Namhong has left Cambodia on Monday heading to Paris to attend the court hearing.

In another development, Mrs. Mu Sochua, Mr. Rainsy's colleague, had been summoned to appear before the Cambodian High Court on 7th April to hear her appeal case against Prime Minister Hun Sen, which she had lodged after the Phonm Penh Court last year judged that she had defamed Mr. Hun Sen and ordered her to pay $4,100 compensation to him.

On 28th October 2009, the Cambodian Appeal Court had upheld the lower court decision and she immediately lodged an appeal to the High Court.

Mr. Yim Sovan, spokesman for the SRP, said Mrs. Mu Sochua is currently on a visit to the United States and she will return soon to Cambodia in time for the court hearing.
