Tourist numbers to Kampot Water Fall and the former mountain top tourist resort of Bokor during the Chinese New Year have fallen dramatically from last year's figures, reports everyday.com.

According to the reports, tourist numbers to Kampot Water Fall dropped by 80% compared to last year's Chinese New Year. Tourism figures show that this year only around 200 vehicles had come to visit the Kampot Water Fall compared to last year's figures of 10,000 (1,000?) vehicles. Mr. Khim Vannara, Kampot tourism official, said this year's tourist numbers to the waterfall during this year's Chinese New Year had fallen significantly with only 100 vehicles had visited the area on the first day of the new year, 40 vehicles the second day and 30 vehicles the third day. He said the reason of the fall was due to the fact that there was not much water falling in the area.

Tourist numbers to the former mountain top resort of Bokor had also fallen, but the fall was not as significant as at Kampot Water fall. However, it is still much lower than during the Khmer New Year in April last year. Tourism figures show that during the three days Chinese New Year, more than 1,000 vehicles had passed the resort's gate.

Mr. Yong Phirum, head of Preah Monivong Bokor National Park, said on 17th February that the figures released are not the total figures because the Chinese New Year goes on until the 18th. However, the initial figures show that on the first day 500 vehicles passed through the gate and on the second day about 200 had passed through the gate. These figures are still lower than during the Khmer New Year.

On the contrary, tourist numbers to Kep Beach have increased significantly. Mr. Heng Se, a rubbish contractor and carpark operator, said during the three days from 14-16 February, there are 1500 cars, 1549 medium-sized vehicles, 89 buses and about 8,000 motorcycles had come to Kep Beach. Mr. Keo Voeun, law and order police, said this year's tourist numbers to Kep Beach had significantly increased much higher than last year.

In the western part of Cambodia, tourist figures to the former homes and gravesites of ex-Khmer Rouge leaders such as Ta Mok's house had increased as well.
